Hip joint injections - what was the outcome?

I’ve had a hard time finding information about successful return to work for horses that have had the hip joint injected (hip joint, NOT the SI). Has your horse had it done? Did (s)he return to regular work?

My mare just had her right hip joint injected (no bone spurs were found in the joint). We think that she may have strained it or fell in the pasture. The SI joint was not involved.

I’m hopeful she can return to regular dressage work. Time will tell, I know. But was looking for anyone’s experience with this issue. Am thinking about trying CMD oil after a we see if the joint injection helped- a friend uses it and swears by it.

Just curious, what we’re her symptoms to cause you to suspect hip in the first place?

I know one that seemed to do well. Lit up on bone scan. But turns out horse now has cervical arthritis and kissing spines so has not had a good outcome at least due to those other issues.

Appaloosa dressage, she started balking under saddle. It was mild at first then got worse and worse. To the point that I was lucky to get 5 cranky steps of trot before she jammed the brakes on, ears pinned, kicking out and then eventually just growing roots and not moving at all. She also seemed “hitchy” behind, not lame but a little not right. Dragging her toes a lot. Massage guy said her left hip had spasms he could not get to release and recommended our local acupuncture vet (who also happens to be the area lameness guru). Ended up being the right hip that was the problem. She also shifted her weight between hind legs a lot- didn’t think much of it initially, but looking back she was probably really sore on both sides and was trying to get relief.

What was the diagnosis leading to the injection? Arthritic changes? Trauma? What did diagnostics, MRI, bone scans or??? show? What’s wrong would influence prognosis and opinion.

Have to say don’t know anybody who has injected the hip joint. Know several who found old hip or pelvic fractures were causing the issues, not the joint, when they did the advanced diagnostic imaging, no injections for that,
