Hip to knee measurement and saddle seat size

Could someone explain the typical relationship between the hip to knee measurement and CC seat size?

I am fighting with CC saddle fever and have tricky conformation

5’3" but 17" from hip joint to knee and ‘blessed’ in the rear baggage compartment. I have a dressage saddle I adore (18" Passier PSL-E) but I find the flap construction in their most of their AP/CC saddles don’t fit me at all

So … not a lot of body height, long thigh and short thick calves. Brand, seat size and style suggestions?

You probably need to go custom or very specific used. You probably need a forward but short flap. As for seat size, it’s hard to tell unless we know your thigh size but probably somewhere between a 17.5-18. I suggest taking a look at County or Antares which have the best forward and short flaps that I’ve really seen, though any custom saddler can make it.

Folks with longer thighs often need a saddle with a longer and/or more forward-set flap. While the size of your “back yard” does come into play somewhat, it’s not the be-all and end-all. Going up a seat size may put your leg where it needs to be, but it can also leave you swimming around in a too-large seat.

Most saddles can be had with a modified flap and block set, but without seeing the horse in question, it’s not possible to make any sort of meaningful recommendations on what saddles would be best to try. Can you post a good conformation shot of your horse, or links to one? That would be a huge help.

I’m riding someone else’s horse part time, so ‘relative’ flexibility of fit for a variety of horses also factors in. Current ride is a medium build hannoverian, well fit by the Childeric (M, I think) that belongs to him.

I’ll get the current saddle specs and a back conformation shot over the weekend, as well.
