HITS Saugerties Hotel -- Greens Inn

Venturing over from dressage land, can anyone recommend the Greens Inn across the street from HITS Saugerties?

Looks pretty spartan and dormitory-like but clean and perfect for the needs of my group. Has anyone stayed here? TIA for any info (good or bad) you can share!

I have not stayed there but in the drive by it couldn’t be closer. Have seen many riders walking in and out with the typical decent vehicles parked there. Most likely Spartan but not a flea bag

Don’t know anyone who has stayed there, but the pics look nice and it is 10 steps away from the showgrounds. We just got back from the show and stayed at the Holiday Inn in Kingston which was decent and really not too far. it took about 15 minutes door to door.

Yes, proximity is great and the rooms while utilitarian, look clean and livable. I also grilled the manager about the cleanliness and he gave me satisfactory answers. I was just hoping to hear some first-hand experience!

Stay away

Everyone i know who has stayed there has not made e then 1 night. NO windows in rooms, some share bothrooms with other “communal” rooms. What does anyone expect for 60 bucks a night across from the show??? If it was decent it would always be booked.

It’s only been there 2 years, so I was hoping that it might not have caught on yet. Rooms are between $90 and $130/night, not $60.

Any other suggestions on where to stay.?We are going in August and don’t have a clue where to stay!

If you can get a room - the Comfort Inn and the Howard Johnsons are both 5 minutes away. Kingston is about 10-15 minutes south and have more selection.

We have a block of rooms reserved at the CI (since March!) but they are all smoking rooms and all of us are non-smokers. We’ve been hoping some NS rooms would clear but they have not as of yet, hence my search for something else. Wish I could get a first-hand review! For a group of people who all know each other, having your bathroom share a door with a communal area is not the end of the world and having the common areas to hang out in would be nice. sleeping rooms without a window would be pretty depressing though.

The Comfort Inn and Howard Johnson in Saugerties are much more pricey than hotels of equal quality one exit south in Kingston (which is a 15-20min drive from the show). There is also a Quality Inn one exit north in Catskill that isn’t bad. I have stayed at the Rodeway Inn in Kingston and the Holiday Inn , however the Rodeway has a better cancellation policy and is a little cheaper. It is not a 5 star hotel, don’t get me wrong, but it’s clean and good enough albeit not plush and uber-comfortable.

The Greens Inn is where a lot of barns house their grooms, etc. While I have not stayed there, I have seen it and it is not worth the extra money you pay for proximity to the show. I wouldn’t call the rooms disgusting but they are indeed depressing and what I would expect to pay $40 a night for, not $90!! I’d stay in Kingston!

i’ve not heard good things about it…

Helpful. Thank you Westie!

We just got back and stayed at the Holiday Inn in Kingston. Not a bad drive at all from the showgrounds, dog friendly and a lot of people from the horse show were staying there.

…no

I would caution you against it as I’ve never heard good things and I’ve heard only that grooms stay.

There are many nice bed and breakfasts which are sometimes much better for a group and for the same price as a box hotel you get a clean plush room and some extra comforts. (http://www.smythehouse.com/ , saugerties bed and breakfast , the clark house ) are all places that friends have stayed and raved about.

The hotels in Kingston, if you want a hotel, are your best bet.

I stay at either one of these, because they are so close to the showgrounds. Both are clean, decent, nothing fancy, Comfort Inn has a free breakfast in the lobby, but no restaurant or room service, HoJo’s has a diner type restaurant on the premises. I have stayed in Kingston, its too far away IMO, 15 minutes and I like to be able to run back and forth to the show grounds, for night check, etc.

Unlikely you can get a room for August now though, they book up fast. We used to make our reservations a year in advance.

I have stayed there, nice pool and we had a dog with us. I just prefer to be closer.

If you’re a group why not rent a house? That’s what my trainer does now, and so do several of her clients. Usually a couple of them share a house, the moms cook and do laundry during the day, since they don’t want to spend the entire day at the show, it was nice coming back each night and having a home cooked meal.

A lot of dressage people stay at the Super 8 in Kingston for the August show and Regionals in September.

Check out the Red Ranch Motel–very basic, but clean and 10 minutes or less from showgrounds, once you know the shortcut. Stayed there recently. Also an ok Italian restaurant right next door. Do not confuse with the Red House Motel, which is even closer but scary.

I stayed at the inn at Cafe Tamayo on Partition Street. Food is excellent and rooms are very nice. They book up well in advance and they only have a few rooms/suites.

I have friends who stay there all the time, they like the convenience, 2 minutes from the show grounds and you’re right in the town of Saugerties, but they do complain about the noise from downstairs sometimes. They are also more expensive IIRC, not for budget minded people.
