Hobby Horse Smoothie Chaps - Keep or Sell?

Once upon a time, back when I thought I would start showing Western pleasure, I picked up a pair of Hobby Horse Smoothie chaps for a pretty good deal.

I never ended up using them, so they’ve been sitting in my closet forever. I feel like I should sell them, but I still want to eventually do some WP, and I know it would not be inexpensive to replace them.

So, should I keep them, or should I sell them? Which way are show ring trends going (especially/particularly for Morgan/Arab shows)? Do we still like smooth leather? Do we still like fringe? Do we still like black, or are we all about custom-colored chaps to match our tops? Is it worth it to keep them, or will they be hopelessly out of style by the time I do get around to joining the wonderful world of bling?

I don’t show WP, but I used to show Reining and have tan smooth chaps. I haven’t shown in a few years and unfortunately have no plans to get back in the show ring any time soon. I do not plan on selling my chaps as long as I can fit into them.

I kind of feel like they are a timeless piece and will always be in style as long as they are a neutral color. you can always buy shirts to match them to get that ‘custom’ look. Granted this is a Reiner talking and not a WP person so we are on completely different levels of ‘bling’…

I would keep them. You can always find a top to match them, and I also agree that they are a timeless piece. Especially for the price of them new… if you got a deal, hold onto them!

Keep them. Black chaps will never be out of style. Coordinating chaps are much more in style right now in the Arab and Morgan worlds, but basic black chaps will get you started.

I would keep them.

Black will coordinate with most anything else.

If slick is not what you want when you decide to show again, you can have any saddler add a thinner curvy strip of swede/rough black the whole length on the outside, with some small silver accents and really make them stand out for bling.
That is done regularly to change looks and would still cost less than new ones.

Keep them! Like others have said, they will NEVER be out of style and they are already paid for.

I haven’t shown nor ridden western (except to a few trail rides) since 2006. My Circle Y WP show saddle is still sitting in my house safely in its quilted bag. I don’t plan on showing western again (eventing/dressage convert) but I know that the saddle will not go bad, and I could never replace it for what I bought it for. And gosh…it’s just so pretty to look at every once in a while!

Oh yeah…and I still have my black chaps too…though I don’t know if they will still fit.

If they are a size sm or med, sell them to me.

Thanks, all. I had definitely decided that I should keep them, and then I thought, “Well, perhaps I should try them on.” The end result is that they are for sale!

What size are they?!?!
Reining rider here looking for a pair of smooth chaps!
