I had a message yesterday that Hokan had been found in his barn unresponsive and was taken to the hospital. Has been in ICU on a ventilator but is now being weaned off the ventilator. There was an address to send cards to if you wish and I will find that and post it. I met him at a clinic and saw him schooling Oskar II, the magnificent, imported Trakehner stallion that he showed to GP, at a show in GA. I was so enamored and awestruck by such a gorgeous stallion, I just halted my gelding and dropped my jaw. I bred a really nice mare to Oskar II and have a daughter that now also has a daughter being started. Both were high scoring at inspections. The message came from the lady in Ga that schedules the Good Horsemen shows, and I can’t think of her name (!!) but I hope Hokan recovers well and gets alot of prayers and cards.
Oh, so sad to read. Although it was over 10 yrs ago when he was in Statesville NC, worked with him several times. Very professional.
I’m in Illinois and Hokan was the top trainer here maybe 20 years ago. I was thinking about him yesterday, wondering where he lives now. Sad news.
I’m glad to read he is seeming to improve in that article! I only know about him due to Oskar, I have a daughter and specifically went looking for an offspring of his when I bought her because of their hind legs and tendency to piaffe. TKR, how lovely for you to have two generations!
Yes, indeed! I was soooo bummed there isn’t any frozen - I wanted to use him again! My 3 year old filly is started and coming home Tuesday and then will be advertised. I’m keeping her mother and another really nice mare, and some retirees, but this filly needs a show home and I’m getting (! - am!) just too old and beat up to do that.
Hokan is back in the saddle as of a few days ago. I don’t know any details beyond what has been publicly shared but am thankful to hear that he’s made such a quick recovery.
