Holsteiner or Irish Sport Horse Stallions?

We’re looking to breed our Dutch Warmblood/Thoroughbred mare “Parfait” and would welcome any stallion suggestions. We’d like to add a little more scope, step and bone with the goal of eventually being a preliminary/intermediate contender. She’s on the hotter side, so amateur rideability and quiet temperment are key traits. We’re happy going with frozen semen to get the right qualities.

Thanks-

We’ve gone the gamut from pure TB’s thru Holsteiners thru Trakehners thru DWB’s and done well with all of them. A good horse is a good horse … I don’t recommend amateurs breeding, but if you must and if you’ve got a lighter DWB cross mare, a little hot, you can’t go wrong with an Irish Sport Horse stallion. Be careful of the type and the bloodlines, and use 1/2 or 3/4 TB in the stallion. Make sure it’s a traditional ISH, not one of the mixed Euro bloodlines. There are several ISH stallions which throw the amateur rideability and temperament you want, but there are others which won’t help you and/or may be too heavy. If your mare is heavy, you need a TB stallion with an amateur mentality.

I’m not a fan of ISH for myself so I do not know as much about them. Most are just not my type of ride but they are certainly many a good one and are certainly the right type for others. I will say, I wouldn’t breed your mare unless you would be happy to get an exact copy of her. I’ve yet to breed a mare who I was looking to change temperament or hotness…granted I like a forward mind and forward ride. Wanting to improve on your mare is every breeder’s goal, but I wouldn’t ever bred a mare unless I hoped to at least get just like her.

I have one Dutch/TB broodmare. I have a lovely 4 year old out of her by Royal Prince. Not a 4* horse but a VERY fancy all rounder. And likely could go up to 2*. But so could her dam. He did improve the rideability and kept the dam’s top movement. That said, her full brother now 3 is VERY different from her in type. He is nice too but HUGE fancy tank where 4 year old is short coupled beautiful little sports car (but super super easy to ride). Breeding can be a crap shoot.

I like the lines on Royaldik and he was quite impressive to me in person. The Royal Diamond lines from him are known for their good brains but he has enough blood when crossing on a mare like yours. Of Holsteiners…I just bred a TB mare to Quiet Easy. She suited him and I have liked his offspring. GK Calucci at Hilltop added bone to my mare’s filly by him…and a good mind. My mare has an exceptional mind but I like that he was a jumper stallion ridden by an amateur and he is lovely in person.

But honestly…there are a TON of nice stallions out there. If you do go down this fun but very expensive black hole of breeding…make sure you do you research on your mare and her family and the the stallion and his. I personally wouldn’t stick to one registry…but would be looking for what family and sire I think would be best with this mare.

Where are you located? It is getting late in the year to start breeding…you don’t have too long of a window.

Royal Appearance is Holsteiner by blood and has produced UL eventers (notably Royal Raconteur who I think was at least 3*?). I have a 3yo by him, great brain, very athletic, super fancy. Very easy so far, has been saddled and longed with no silliness.

Formula One is ISH, 3/4 TB, has also produced a 4* horse. My 7yo by him is smart, fancy, super athletic, bit of a spook from mom but an absolute warrior over fences. And very very rideable, will gallop along at whatever rate I ask and come back in a heartbeat without argument (which could be a problem with her mom and her full TB half sister!).

Flagmounts Freedom is 9/16 TB ISH, evented Intermediate and has a great reputation for amateur friendly temperaments. I believe he is now going Training with owner’s daughter… has produced UL offspring like Flagmount’s Mischief. Expecting 2 of those at our farm next spring.

A friend has a 1/2 Dutch, 3/8 Irish Draught, 1/8 TB gelding who was imported from Ireland. He is an incredible jumper who events and foxhunts. He is an amazing athlete and a good guy.

I have to echo some of the wise advice posted above. Don’t breed unless you would be happy/delighted with an exact copy.

With a hotter mare, you may have better luck breeding to an Irish Draught instead of Irish Sport Horse, if you’re looking for an ammy-friendly product.
I’ve admired this guy for a while:

Not one of the breeds in your question, but I recently met this guy and he is awesome. He’s dutch and crosses really nicely with thoroughbred mares. He has a great temperament:

I LOVE the 3/4 TB-1/4 ISH’s we’re breeding…but you have to know the individual horses…not just go by what you see on paper!! We have a 2 year old now that looks/moves like one of the best pure TB’s around…but is only 5/8 TB with an “Irish” brain.
