Home Remedies for Dog Ear Mites?

Our beagle/cocker spaniel/dachshund mix has ear mites, for the first time in the 7 years that we’ve had her!

I’m hesitant to use over-the-counter meds with pesticides. She is on Frontline all the time, and the infection is only in her right ear at the moment: brown coffee ground-like granules, mild scabbing on her ear flap. I cleaned up her ears with mineral oil and Qtips, treating the wounds with Hydrogen Peroxide, twice since I discovered the mites a few days ago.

A friend of mine used Calm Coat to treat mites on her horse’s tail and mane that were causing him to itch, terribly. Before I go drop $$ on Calm Coat, does anyone know of any home remedies that has worked well for them for dog ear mites? Thanks.

Are you sure its ear mites? Thought my dog had these a few weeks ago and we treated and treated with OTC stuff, cleaned ears every day: no change. Took her to the vet and it was a yeast infection. They had to scrub it out and gave me an ear flush that inhibits bacteria growth and a treatment spray. She was more comfortable almost immediately. The ear flush is by Epi-Otic, looks like you can get it OTC. The treatment spray was prescription.

With your dog breed’s droopy ears, I would think a yeast infection is a good possibility. My vet said that dogs actually rarely get ear mites; not nearly so much as cats.

Good luck!

thanks, cllane1, I’ll have her checked out!
