Does anyone have suggestions for how to make a hairball remedy for cats? Or a commercial product that cats actually like? One of my cats is regurgitating his food, and I’m certain he has hairballs. I have Tomlyn Hairball Remedy, but he’s not too keen on it. He likes Capilex, but you can only get that through a vet and no vets around here sell it anymore. I’ve also tried hairball treats but he won’t eat them. What have you used that your cat liked?
My two love Purina Hairball dry food and also Purina Sensitive Skin and Stomach which is better than plain Hairball. But
I also give them lots of canned Fancy Feast. The old long haired cat no longer throws up hairballs.
Also I’ve read to give 1 or 2 egg yolks per week, mixed with wet food.
I do not have cats. Therefore, a hairball recipe is so far beyond gross, I cannot tell you.
Carry on!
most hairball products are flavored petroleum jelly. Some cat like unflavored “vaseline”
mixing vaseline with tuna oil or chicken fat might be more agreeable than malt or brewers yeast… Or mix it into the canned food
The product is indigestible and simply lubricate the hair through. If a hairball is too big, it will not pass rearward and becomes a surgical case
Papain can be used chronically to breakdown the proteins of the fur to help break them down and pass. Cats usually wont eat papain on its own and they have to be pilled with the tablets. Most papain tablets are made with pineaplle or papaya. The Trader Joe papain tablets are chewble and tasty to me, though cats dont, as a rule , like sweets. If the kitty eats soft food, you can crumble the tablets and mix to the food.
Ditto to what hoopoe said about plain Vaseline.
I used it with my old Ragdoll and he LOVED it. He’d hop up on the bed and stick his paw out to beg whenever I opened up the drawer where I kept it.
Have you tried putting the Tomyln on the top of his front leg and letting him lick it off? Even if a cat won’t eat it willingly most will try to clean it off. (Start with a small amount in case they take off wildly shaking their paw!)
