Does anyone make their own poultice for applying to legs? It seems like it would be pretty easy to make, it’s mainly just clay and a few additives like essential oils.
Kaolin I think, not regular clay.
Drillers’ mud, cider vinegar, alum and menthol and water to make the rght consistency
Where would you get drillers mud?
Went on a Google romp and figure by drilling mud you mean bentonite clay. Some forms of drilling use solvents and oils. Bentonite makes sense as it has various other health and even industrial food prep uses. Looks like it is fairly available.
I once bought plain modelling clay in a craft supply store to use as a hoof pack but that wouldn’t work for leg poultice.
Around here, you just go order bentonite aka drillers’ mud as it is used to seal dugouts, firm up mudholes around watering troughs and it isn’t loaded with chemicals; when drillers use it, chemicals are formulated for the well rather than added ad hoc to tons of the stuff.
Old-fashioned clay cat litter mixed with water. It is bentonite (sometimes fragrance is added–get the ‘purest’ you can find).
Seriously?? That would be so simple!
It’s old-school economy and a pain. It has to first be pulverized in a blender. (After poulticing, we’d wrap the legs in newspaper, which looked even classier). I’d try the driller’s mud if you really want to go the DIY route.
I bought a 5 gallon pail for $20. Why bother trying to make your own?
