Homemade sweet potato chews?

I saw dried sweet potato chips in a catalog and thought “Hey, I could make those!”

Anyway, since I don’t get out much :D, I was wondering if most dogs like them. I have Corgis which generally eat anything. Sweet Potatoes should be going on sale pretty quick and I was thinking about digging out my dehydrator and making a bunch. Anybody have any experience doing this? I’m wondering about thickness and time in my big round Ronco dehydrator…

I did them for my last dog - I sliced them ~1/4 inch thick, dried them in the oven on low temp, turning every 10 min until they were done. She loved them. I am going to try them again for the new pup now that the weather is cooling off again. If for some reason she doesn’t like them, she has lots of friends to share with!

No idea about how to make them but will say that all three of my dogs love them.

My corgis love them. I keep meaning to buy a food dehydrator to make my own.

I made some in my oven, but have to say that it took soooooo long that it wasn’t worth the trouble. My dogs like eating the sweet potatoes raw, so I just cut up the potato into bite size pieces and feed them like treats.

I do it with my oven on occasion. The slicing takes a long time but I just make a huge batch all at once, so I don’t have to do it too often. I also do it on a day that I’m going to be home all day.

Slice sweet potatoes into 1/4" thick slices.
Turn oven on as low as it will go.
Put slices on baking sheet and pop into the oven for at least 8 hours. I don’t turn them or anything, too much effort.
Store inside a freezer bag in the freezer.

Get yourself a nice mandolin and it won’t take so long. I don’t know how I ever lived without one!

Go for it

My dogs like em raw, too, but they don’t keep for weeks on fresh the way they do dehydrated.
Store inside a freezer bag in the freezer.
I made a batch. It took forever in my oven but I thought I finally got the thickness right. I finally turned off the oven because I wanted to go to bed. I had them in a jar on the counter -for the dogwalker- for weeks and weeks until I noticed mold. Oopsy. Haven’t made em since.

It is definitely do-able and preferable to keep them in the fridge or freezer. Maybe using a dehydrator makes em shelf-stable?

Be REALLY careful when using the mandolin. I had known more than a few people that have taken a big chunk or slice of their own fingertip or knuckle.

There are gloves you can buy that protect your hands when using knives.

I only use my fingers until it gets too small to comfortably handle, then I use the gripper thing on the top. I am terrified of slicing my fingers!
