Homemade thirst drink

Trying to come up with a homemade Horse Quencher. Any suggestions? I was thinking of using electrolytes, apple juice and maybe a few alfalfa cubes.

My mares like the root beer flavored Horse Quencher but they bang the bucket around and spill a lot of it to be able to get the yummy bits which sink to the bottom. That’s partly what made me think of alfalfa cubes—since they want to float; and for flavor.

Any suggestions on ratios? Trying to be mindful of sugars. I have no idea how much apple juice to get them interested but not be too much sugar. Based on a standard stall bucket—I guess holds about 3 gallons?

Thoughts?

A glug of molasses and a handful of salt in a 7 gallon bucket of warm water.

Black strap molasses isn’t as high sugar as you’d think and a little goes a long way. It’s got a strong distinctive flavor in addition to the sweetness that can flavor a large volume of water. And it’s cheap.

Excellent, thank you!

Does a glug measure out to be the same as a blob? :joy:

Sweet Water - handful of rice bran in a bucket of water.

Same can be done with a handful of alfalfa pellets, you just have to wait long enough for them to break down to become “tea” (which can be quick, or not, depending on the brand).

Standard stall water buckets are 5 gallons.

Ditto the blackstrap molasses - a little goes a very long way.

I think glug is the metric (I’m in Canada) and blob is the Imperial measure. But they are roughly equivalent.

I use a couple of handful of roughage cubes/finely ground hay small cubes in a bucket with a glug of molasses (I am also Canadian!) and electrolytes. Any kind of pelleted feed would work. I pour warm water over before riding and the cubes/pellets have become mush by the time we finish. I top the bucket up with warmish water, give it a stir and mare will drink the whole thing. It’s her cup of tea!
