Honest Kitchen dehydrated food

Does anyone feed this or have experience with it?

After Ziwipeak turned out to be a bust and a big vet bill for my little guy, I kept him on his Wellness Core Raw Rev, but I’m still looking for something else. I received a 50% off coupon to try Honest Kitchen and read a little about it, so I made an order to try it.

Oh, I’m looking for another food because while my guy’s stomach can tolerate his current food still, I think they’ve changed the formula a bit because he is now chewing himself, which he never did before over the last few years with this food.

I wanted the turkey, but they were out so we’re trying the chicken since my guy actually does better on feathered protein. He’s an older JRT with not the best teeth and lifelong stomach issues unless on very specific feeds.

I fed it for quite some time to two border terriers. They did well on it and liked it (but most borders will eat anything!) It did tend to get stuck up in their teeth some, and my girls were both predisposed to gunky teeth. As they got older (and one was struggling with a significant health problem and loads of heavy medication), I did notice that it started going through them more quickly, especially my sick girl. That was likely the issue of her illness/medication and not the food. Switched because of that. If I ever fed it to my Doberman bc he was out of his food or we were on the road and I didn’t have his raw, he would poop for days…lol! Never diarrhea or upset - just lots of volume to his poop.

I started feeding it because my one dog was having horrible skin issues, and I wanted to avoid medication to resolve those issues if possible. Honest Kitchen pretty much fixed her skin issues for years and she never needed allergy meds.

Fed it to an elderly guy with kidney issues. He did really well on their base mix (Preference, I think) and no additive canned food. The base mix is nice in that you can add your protein of choice.

I typically feed my poultry intolerant dog a variety of raw, homemade and canned as back-up but meat has been hard to source lately. Actually, Honest Kitchen is now cheaper than the raw I’ve been feeding for years but it used to be more expensive. Tried the fish version a few years ago and it gave her horrible gas but I found the beef one on sale last year and gave it a try. She does well on this so I kept it on hand instead of canned and now feed it almost daily.

To be honest, the texture is a little off putting (to me, not the dog) but it’s versatile and easy to store. Getting the ratio correct can be hard to figure out but my dog will eat anything and there are some days where she gets soup because I was too lazy to measure the water. There are other days where I add a tablespoon of the dry powder to her homemade food to make it less soupy.

I use it as supplement for my dogs. Mainly as to mix in Kongs/toppls with kibble and raw. My dogs LOVE it and my cat thinks its crack. I started it because I was breeding my picky eater and needed something that she would eat when she turned her nose up at her regular food. I have continued it because it’s great to mix in Kongs and freeze. I use their whole food clusters as training treat-dogs love them. It’s expensive but a box lasts a while. I generally add a litter more water then they recommend to make it last longer-but it is not their base diet.

I used to feed Honest Kitchen dehydrated duck as a top-dress (re-hydrated) to my Fromm Gold Small Breed Adult that my 2 Border Terriers eat.

Got annoyed when Honest Kitchen jumped on the grain-free bandwagon and discontinued the dehydrated duck ‘with grain’.

Still on Fromm Gold SBA but now toss a few kibbles of the Honest Kitchen Duck A La Veg on top.

I use Honest Kitchen’s Whole Food Clusters for my scentwork treats… small and I don’t worry about contaminating the search area.

I fed my tiny elderly rescue dog this food for a while. Loved the quality, price, and ease and freshness. However, my dog pooped out more than went in, like 4-5 times a day. She had been eating Steve’s Frozen raw food before this without any issues. Honest Kitchen just has too much fiber in it.

Switched to Answers Raw Frozen food and never looked back.

Thanks guys! This information is very helpful.

Our box is supposed to be in today, so I will try to start mixing a little into his current food to see if he can tolerate it.

Your posts give me hope! Along with his digestion issues, my guy is not a good pooper so maybe this food will help in that department as well.

I need to explore the different versions of the food too it looks like. I kept seeing “base mix”, but I wasn’t exactly sure how that worked and it looks like I clearly need to do more research because that may be a good way to go for us if this box works for his tummy.

Just wanted to update and say that we have a winner! He loves this food and does really well on it with no gastric distress or itching.
