honey suckle and and tap root climber pulling down fences

I am waging war every day inside the fence perimeter and outside the fence peremeter. The honeysuckle and creepers turn into unstoppable ropes that pull the fence and create a substrate for nasty poison ivy to grow on the fence. Then I can’t even mow the fence line, cuz the poison ivy and blackberry evil canes rip off your skin. Its woven wire fence. Any ideas?

Have you tried herbicide?

Check with your county agent and/or co-op. I’m sure they have products that can help with the problem.

We hired a specialty firm to come and clear our fencelines when we bought our place, as they were pretty overgrown and not only had poison ivy but a ton of scary barbed plants (think killer roses) that I just didn’t want to deal with. (There was also a massive “burn pile” that had all sorts of stuff in there that I did not actually want to burn, and they made short work of that as well, which was awesome.) I now have nice paths around the perimeter fencing as well as better sightlines to the nice creek that borders the farm. Well worth the modest expense.

I don’t use an herbicide becuz we have a fish pond and scared of carcinogens. Although……. it does cross my mind with the nasty poison ivy and wild blackberry brambles.

I am not opposed to better living through chemistry on occasion, and poison ivy definitely qualifies. I’m not as affected by it but my husband will end up at the doctor getting a shot if he gets within a dozen feet of the stuff.

If you also have blackberry though, it might end up needing a mix of things to get it all.

We also get some sort of grass with a rhizome that gets into the fence. I have been known to take my broadfork out there and break up the ground along the fenceline and then pull out the offending plants.

But if yours are already tall and woven in and pulling on the fence then you’re way beyond that point.

The carcinogen scare is vastly overstated, mostly by TV lawyers trolling for clients.

Don’t know about a risk to a fish pond. Your county agent might. Give them a call.
