Honey the ASB update and progress thread!

I don’t disagree they need more fill, but there’s nothing wrong with walking around and a little trotting right now. She isn’t going to the next 5* event like this, she’s just doodling around the arena.

Building the right muscles now will help in the long run. It’s also giving the owner something to look forward to. Win win.

Oh, sorry if you misunderstood .
I didn’t mention exercise, did I?

Well when all you can find to say about a horse that’s walking around an arena with a proud owner is “she’s still really underweight” and “I just see a croup, haunches and shoulder that need more”, it’s pretty well assumed that you’re implying the owner is doing something wrong here.

They’re not.

Quit nit picking, Rome wasn’t built in a day, the horse looks great and the owner is finally able to ride. That’s awesome. Don’t be a ninny.

Thank you for your support! I really appreciate it!

I also realize she needs more muscle. We’ll get there! It looks like we might have a big life/barn change coming real soon that I think will help with a lot of it.

I haven’t had an update in a few days…

When I said things were rough and different over here, I meant it. Officially going through a divorce.

But Honey has been a god-send. Like I said-she lets me sit with her and cry, just brush her endlessly…whatever. This has been a good thing, though. Things will get better. It’s just meant very little for updates. I will say, it’s a boring update but exciting to me: She went a full shoe cycle without tossing a shoe. Huzzah! Also-- we have a few little remaining cuts healing on her face, but she hasn’t bonked her face open in a bit. Looking less like she’s gone to battle.

I’m really looking forward to this weekend with her. Her boyfriend (in the pics above) is going to a local schooling show with my friend who moonlights as our trainer. So, Honey is going to tag along. Before anyone gets anxious: NO SHE WILL NOT BE RIDDEN. She’s going to go on the trailer, come off, wear her new halter and be freshly bathed, and graze. That’s it. I just want her to experience the show environment with NO pressure what so ever. And, the bonus is that her boyfriend gets a pal to hang out with. Win-win. I think it’ll be a nice bonding day!

That sounds like a lovely, low pressure outing for her.

I’m sorry for your bad news - the only way out is through though, so have a good big cry and then eyes up. The windshield is bigger than the rear view mirror, and you and Honey have a lot in your future.

I’m sorry to hear that. You can always come here to vent/whine etc. Honey’s fan club will support you—crazy horse people have to stick together!

I’m so sorry to hear this. I went through a difficult divorce a couple of years ago. As endlessclimb said, the only way out is through. Hang in there, and never hesitate to lean on the people (and horses) in your corner. I’m glad you have Honey. Horses can give us such comfort, joy and peace.

The schooling show outing sounds like it will be a lot of fun, and a great thing for your Honey mare too!

It kind of gets to me when people start saying that ASBs are expected to be light, or thin, or thrifty looking. It’s a function of how they are worked and fed. Their original structure matters, yes, but you can do so much.

This is from a presentation that I gave many years ago at the ASHA convention. I wanted people to see how the horses are so much more similar than different- and ASBs absolutely are warmbloods.

Enjoy! American Saddlebred Sport Horses–awesome athletes!

Thanks for sharing that!

I have always thought that it is very fortunate that horses have such big shoulders: we can cry on them, and they will never betray our confidence. I am sorry that you’re in such a difficult place right now, but I am glad that you have her.

Also: how exciting! Field trips are excellent. Giving her a chance to look and see a wider part of the world in a calm, low-pressure way is such a great way to introduce a horse to places other than “home”. I hope you have an excellent time!

Can’t wait to read about Honey’s field trip. What a good idea. So very sorry for your life challenges- you’ve got a sweet mare and all of us to lean on. Hugs and jingles.

I think Honey has come a long way, and will continue to blossom. I wonder if carrot stretches might be incorporated as well, tummy lifts and the like so she starts using herself differently. I turned an upside down twh into a completely different shape via basic dressage and 7 million tummy lifts and carrot stretches over a couple of years:)

Thanks all! I really appreciate it

Good call on the carrot stretches and all that. I was doing them for a while then they kinda fell off my radar. Gotta bring them back for sure!
