Hooded Rain Poncho - What do you use?

This past fall & now winter have brought new meaning to “wet” where I live. We have literally worn out our rain ponchos by using them multiple times a day, day after day. We have three kinds - the super cheap “emergency” ones (I keep a few on-hand if the regular one can’t be found, is soaked or gets ripped), the mid-range light weight one with snaps and one heavy duty one with snaps.

I can’t wear the heavy duty one - I get too hot doing chores in it. So I’m looking for a decent mid-weight one (prefer longer length to shorter, to try to keep the mud from splattering on my jeans/pajamas) that is resistant to tearing or being poked with holes from stemmy hay, but not really so thick that I suffocate wearing it.

Anybody got something they really like and can recommend? TIA

would a military poncho work? I used one in Asia during the monsoons … I do not remember ever being dry however as we had one stretch of 40 days/nights of none stop rain (sun came out one morning and by mid afternoon it was dust flying as we landed helicopters)

those poncho are designed for free movement

dearie its your turn to feed

Would that be something one would find at an Army/Navy store? Or online? I’ve not seen one that I am aware of, so I’m not entirely sure.

When we hit those times with relentless rain, we give up and use rubber boots and rain suits.
We put light nylon pants over regular pants and a rain jacket and that keeps us mostly dry.
We even ride in those the times we get caught before we are thru working cattle.

Walmart has in their hunting section a Coleman rain suit that is great for that.
They are cheap and we have several of those in different sizes and colors.
They last for years.

Those that see them or try one for the first time get some of their own.
Or “borrow” the one we loan them, why we have several and have to keep replacing them.

on line might be easier, we have a huge military surplus store in Ft Worth called Omahas , they have nearly anything

Ah, camouflage… of course! That would probably be a danger to the wearer here (blending in when there are people hunting all around (and unfortunately, sometimes ON) our property. I usually go with red or bright blue so I stick out like a sore thumb.

Not a poncho, but a jacket: the outback rain shell. I have HAD it with freakin oilskins. I have two Barbours and a Filson and they are worthless in real rain. Plus the Barbours are either too hot or too cold. This summer went on a riding trip in Iceland where it rained every day and all but one of us switched to the heavy rubber fisherman 66 degrees jackets because our others just didn’t work. After hunting in the rain in my Filson for four hours and yes I was completely soaked, got the Outback from Smartpak and am VERY pleased. It keeps me dry, the hood fits over my helmet, the back fits over my cantle and the sleeves have Velcro that keep the sleeves from interfering with my handling reins and keeps rain out. A huge thumbs up. Plus they said I could return it if it leaked. My husband contacted them directly to get one and they stand 100% behind their product.

It would be super to have something dual-purpose for rain gear for riding too… only my husband would have a really hard time fitting into a “fitted/sized” coat that would also fit me. It’s one reason we use ponchos - because we can both wear the same one. But that would be a super thing to put on Christmas list (for me).

I also like a poncho for many reasons, including keeping things in my hands dry. Of course blowing sideways rain is another thing. I am also looking for a rather heavy duty one - the Vinyl one I have had for years from WM has finally torn at the neck. Heavier ones stay down in the wind and do not wrap themselves around or cling to damp legs.
Definitely NOT interested in camo sorry.
Any leads appreciated.

Frog Toggs rain suit. Best $20 you’ll ever spend.

Ditto. There is no poncho that keeps you as dry as a rain suit or gives you the freedom of movement while keeping you dry.

I would just die in a rain suit… I need some air flow. Don’t care if my arms or whatnot get a bit wet - core stays dry in a poncho. I have Multiple Sclerosis and the bits of my brain that control body temp are fried. Can overheat easily with little exertion, even in 42° and rain - so need the poncho to be as loose as possible and not really heavy fabric/plastic/whatever.

I do wear tall rain boots through. Nothing worse than having an ankle gummie sucked off your foot by the mud!

My husband and I went on a horse packing trip in Montana a few years ago and I bought us both the Outback Pak-A-Roo. We never used them since Montana was having a drought that year. But I’ve been using it a lot around the barn. I can’t recommend it enough.

its a jacket not a poncho
