Hoof Abscess draining out of the coronary band.

My first hoof abscess that is draining out the top (coronary band). What are your experiences with these? Vet could not find a draining tract in the bottom of the hoof. He does have some good bruises though. B was off, then more sore yesterday and very sore today. I have not been out nearly as much as normal because of my own health issues. B did have another hoof abscess in 2013, but that was from the flood in CO.

Vet gave him exceed and will do a repeat dose in five days. He is also getting bite (2 grams SID). I am going to be soaking his hoof once a day in iodine/Epsom salt and we are also wrapping with a espom salt poultice.

Any thoughts, experiences, etc?

If it is draining from the top, I would be sure your soak is deep enough to cover that area. When you wrap, try to keep a drawing salve on that area.

My SB gelding would get them and they ALWAYS came up through the coronary band.

My TB gelding has a couple, some draining from the sole and some from the coronary band.

You can just leave it and it will be fine.

I’ve only dealt with one. It seemed like he healed much faster from it than one draining from the bottom.

Just dealt with that a couple of weeks ago. Took a long time to pop. X-rays showed a line that we thought would drain at the heel. Once it started to open at the coronet I poulticed the area with animalintex for a few days then I left it alone. The area is growing out nicely now with no further problem.

This.

The only thing I’ve ever done with these is to coat the area with ichthammol ointment to keep it open and draining. I’ve let the horse be on as much turnout as possible.

Giving Bute and antibiotics only slows down the Abscessing process, had one of my geldings pop and abscess out, cornet band was sound right after it popped. Kept it clean and did nothing else healed fine never another issue

I wouldn’t soak out of concern that soaking would introduce bacteria to the wound. I’ve wrapped with animalintex pad to encourage drainage. Then just tried to keep it clean until it closed.

We’ve had a few. Try to keep it clean–easier than when it’s on the sole, imo.

I had a horse that always had them come out at the top. I soaked, etc, the same as a regular abscess at the sole. It did seem like he would be lame from his abscesses a little bit longer than other horses. Likely there will be a small horizontal hole/crack left which will have to grow down with the hoof.
