I’m not a ‘boot’ person, really. But, I find myself needing boots for miss maresy’s hind feet when we trail ride.
What do I need to know about correctly fitting to the hinds? I know they are shaped different than the front, that’s about it.
TIA!

I don’t think hind boots are any different- you just have to measure the feet and your mare may take a different size than her front boots. I’ve never had luck with boots lol.
I know you’ve had a lot to deal with with your mare. Is she chipping a lot or what signs is she giving that you’re thinking of giving her hind hoof protection? I always find shoes easier but shoes all around is definitely a bit pricey.
I’ve usually had to go a size smaller in the hind boots and sometimes need a narrower fit. There’s nothing significantly different, but measure carefully.
I’ve had good experiences with both Scoot boots and Renegades. I’m currently using Scoots because they don’t have Velcro which makes them easier to manage & clean.
I have Renegades and my mare wears the same size front and back but…they are adjusted differently (hinds slightly shorter front to back). To help, I order a different color for the hinds so I don’t have to look…or think.
You will just need to measure carefully and find the size that works for the hinds.
Scoot Boots have a “slim” version in each size. For us, we are a size 5 in the front and a 5 Slim for the backs. The slims are a little narrower.
Where we ride has a lot of boulder rock and gravel as the base, so it can be very hard. It’s just a matter of making sure she’s comfortable.
The Renegades look like they’d be comfortable, and easy to put on. You have no trouble with them staying snug enough?
I’ve used Scoot Boots on the front before, but not the back. They worked well.
It’s really going to depend on hoof shape. I have a set of renegades (that I keep forgetting to list for sale) for the fronts and for the life of us they just didn’t work. And I had friends that have fitted and used them for years.
I have had no trouble with the Renegades staying on. The main reason I put her in boots is to minimize hoof wear in the dry months i.e. for protection. Because she drags a bit in back, I make sure she has hind boots on…sometimes I leave the fronts off but only if I am pressed for time. I am one of those balance people. If I am going to put something on the front, I want the same thing on the back. She does have some twist in her right hind but she has never twisted out of her boots.
Resurrecting an older thread to see if anyone has any updated recommendations for hind boots. Thanks
It is just what will fit the horse.
Some brands do have slim sizing for back feet.
As above, I have had no problem with back boots staying on. If they fit, they should stay on. I am currently using Flex boots behind. They don’t fit her front feet so she has Renegades on the front. When the Flex boots wear out, I will go back to Renegades on the back.
Kyrabee, you are using Flex boots?? Just last night my farrier was out and he mentioned those, for my mares hinds, for trail riding. I’d never heard of them.
Can you comment - what do you like/dislike, etc.?
for anyone interested: https://www.flexhoofboots.com/
The Flex Boots work fine for her hinds. Unfortunately her fronts are between sizes (unless they have expanded their size offerings.) They are super simple to apply and remove. I have not had any issues with twisting or loss or rubs. The main problem with them combined with the Renegades in front is unless she is carrying herself really well, she forges. The breakover is more forward with less roll with the Flex boots.
That is my reason for returning to the Renegades in back…back to that balance thing. I have read other things where users were disappointed with their wear. Mine are fine so far but they haven’t gotten a lot of use. I do need to order new gaiters. The color layer is peeling off the neoprene (but still no rubs).

Would you please expand on what a lot of use would be for you? I’m thinking less than 10 miles once or twice a week on rocky trails would be my usage. How does that compare with your usage? Thank you
The wear is something my farrier mentioned also. If you are riding endurance or such these are probably not the boot for you. His client was getting ~2 years out of them.
For what you mention they would likely be fine.
Another option aside from boots, pack with Rebound and clean shavings.
Thank you
Yes…my riding has been verrry hit and miss. 2 1/2 years ago I moved to a barn with no indoor. I also care for my 94yo mother which currently is severely limiting my horse time. I only use them late spring through fall when it is hard and dry here. Our trails are primarily sand and hard packed dirt…not many rocks where we are currently. Mine don’t show much wear but they also don’t have a whole lot of miles on them either. I have read about the wear issue.
