Hoof Soaks

For those who soak hooves regularly, what products do you like? I’m not talking about abscess soaks, but rather “antimicrobial” soaks.

What boots and additives do you use?

I’ve been long suffering using IV bags to soak, but I think it’s time for an upgrade in that department. I also use a plastic Davis soaking boot, but I’m wondering if it’s worth it upgrade to one of the “soft” bag models.

I’m familiar with regular soaking concoctions: Cleantrax, White Lightning, Oxine, ACV, epsom salts, peroxide, etc. But I’ve noticed some new products on the market, too, like Keratex’s Hoof Soak & Wash, which doesn’t seem to have ingredients listed anywhere. Just curious what the current preference is…

Thanks!

Over the years I’ve tried a lot of different types of boots (home made and otherwise) and always came back to the Davis boot.

^^^^ Me too. I finally broke down and ordered a second Davis boot to save time.

I bought heavy duty extra large ziploc type bags from Uline and use either Easyboot Clouds or the Hoof Sock. This works great for me. I usually soak with Oxine AH and this allows for me to easily dump out the soak and tape up the plastic bag for the out gassing afterwards.

I soak in an Oxine/vinegar mix (White Lightening) after I’ve scrubbed the hoof clean with dawn. I also have found that Lysol works quite well on killing thrush .

Still working on the best way to soak. Currently I use turkey brine bags. Cover with vet wrap and it works. Would love to find a more effective way to do this.

I used the soft type soaking bag, and it starting leaking after a few uses. When I soak, my horses stand on a mat that is over the dirty aisle in the barn, and the weight of them just standing on the bag was enough to make it start to tear and leak.

I have been using the David boot since and been pretty happy with it. It seems like it will last a lot longer than the soft boot did.

I got the Clean Trax tall boots quite a few years ago, and really like them. They don’t get abused, and I do use them in the stall, but they aren’t pristine anymore either. They came in extra handy a couple years ago when I was icing feet/legs to help ward off laminitis when my horse contracted anaplasmosis and a fever of 107  It was nice to be able to dump ice all down that boot so I got his lower legs as well.

Thanks for the feedback so far! I’m wondering if I should just invest in a 2nd Davis boot to speed the process along… using IV bags kind of sucks. I’m not sure why I keep torturing myself with them.

I have used the sturdy plastic type bags 5-10lbs of cat or dog food come in. . Put liquid and medication in, do up the ziplock then duct tape.

I use these with the top strap cut off. Available in the camping aisle. Easy to get the leg in and tall enough that you can duct tape around the top under the knee to keep it on. Cheap, sturdy and lasts a long time. I like that they are clear.
