Horn and Voice in the hunt field

http://nwhsa.redblackandgreen.net/horn.html

This is a very cool site.

I’d be interested to know if their is any regional variety to the use of the horn and voice.

This is excellent! I’ve added the site to my favorites list so I can study these at leisure.

Ironic source, though …

VERY IRONIC!!!

Ah, I see, this is to help sabs tell what the hunt is doing.

Not so much that as to teach them what to blow on the horn to disrupt the hunt by distracting and confusing the hounds–which is potentially highly dangerous to the hounds, incidentally. Another irony.

Source of link aside, in answer to the question of ‘regional variety,’ the ‘tunes’ themselves are standard, gone away, gone to ground, whipper-in come here, and so forth. But- each individual huntsman may have a different way of blowing them, along with some extra little ‘calls’ for his/her pack or staff.

You would have to consider use of cow horn instead of brass horn a distinct American variation! Melvin Poe used to use a cow horn, and Dr. Rogers at Loudoun West did. I think the MFH/ huntsman at Misty Morning (Ark) may use a cow horn currently, but no others I’m aware of.
