Horrendous Case of 'Alleged' Abuse in VA -

I, too, stopped breeding in part because of situations like this. I have been quite good so far at keeping up with most of the horses I have bred and sold, but it makes me sick to think that one might end up in a situation like this.

There is a (now former) employee of Hilton Farm who is publicly stating that she resigned from her position there because of the association of her employers and the Doyles with Ms. Shumate/Goland, and that Tommy Doyle in particular was a regular visitor to Peaceable Farm and yet he did nothing to stop or prevent this tragedy and did not notify any authorities about the conditions there.

All it takes for evil to flourish is for good people to do nothing.

I just got back from dropping of a ton of medical supplies and needed items at one of the drop off points for Hope’s Legacy, Central Virginia rescue and the Orange County shelter. The owner said he estmated about $20,000 worth of supplies and things these animals will need have come in so far. There was a huge pallet of horse feed donated by Nutrena, and many lovely horse owners pulling in with their vehicles stuffed with blankets and the like.

Bittersweet…I gave up the halters of my horses that have passed, name plates and all. I cried all the way home thinking maybe their wonderful spirits will help which ever horse wears them.

The owner of Saddlery Liquidators told me they are in real need of ulcer meds, as one might well imagine. Gastroguard, Ulcerguard, etc. I have a large box of the Adler pop rocks so I’ll run back up later and drop that off too.

He told me has been allowed to keep 18 horses in the best shape, PG warmblood mares. Egad!

It boggles my mind that she is allowed to keep any living creature. So basically she gets to keep the “profitable” ones and other people, including tax payers, get to expend time, money and emotional energy cleaning up her mess. Every animal lover and tax payer in Virginia needs to flood their elected officials with complaints. Their animal welfare laws are in serious need of revision.

This is the petition circulating to Virginia Senator Bryce Reeve. Almost 10,000 signatures as of noon. Please sign and pass on to your friends. Thanks.

I dropped off 15 or so blankets/turnouts and other items in Haymarket today, sid, so I probably saw you there. CVHR doesn’t need any more blankets now but Gentle Giant in Mt. Airy could use large sizes. Also, if anyone has copies of checks sent in payment of horse or breeding purchases and the check is from Peaceable Farm, Inc., Diana Wheeler - Commonwealth ATTY for Orange Co, VA is looking for copies sent to her itemizing what the purchase covered. I’ve sent one from a breeder friend who sold that farm frozen semen and received a bounced check, a copy of which is now with Diana Wheeler’s office, and the office did respond that this is welcomed as well as any others that could be sent.

Not to mention that a house she owned (aside from the farm) and also in Somerset had over 100 dead cats in it when they investigated.

She was reported to be living in a truck, with dead animals, because the house was so uninhabitable.

I do know that several people in the Somerset area reported this several weeks before the authorities did anything.

She is mentally unbalanced and a hoarder of the worst kind. I have also been told she has been banned in two states (not Virginia).

There is a third name she has gone by as well in addition to the two mentioned above.

It will be interesting to see what she has in those storage units.

Yes, we probably did see each other. Thanks for the info on the blankets, I was going to run some up there this a.m.

Since there are 2 threads on this topic, you might want to also post this info on the other one, especially the CA information.

It just keeps on getting worse as more information comes out.
I am so sad for those poor animals.
Just sickening and heartbreaking.

If it is true she was living in a car with dead animals because the house was full of dead animals, this is a case of severe mental health issues. I blame the authorities as she belongs in an institution.

I am curious as to whether there is legal standing to pursue the Board of Directors individually for their failure to ensure the monies taken in were used appropriately (fraud). This is all beyond abominable.

This page is all about it (and there is to be a live newscast on Monday ) https://www.facebook.com/groups/551668128322516/552660754889920/?notif_t=group_activity

She is not mentally unbalanced. She is not a hoarder. Stop this right now because it will only get her off from any legal punishment. The 18 warmblood horses are in good shape because she deliberately, purposely, starved the others to feed her warmbloods. She established a rescue - she took in over $1 million in 2013 - and purposely starved all those animals, using the money she made to fund her warmblood breeding program. This is calculated cruelty and I don’t believe for one moment Anne Goland / Anne Shumate is some poor mentally ill person. She knew exactly what she was doing and did it willingly and purposefully.

I am so tired of the “mental illness” excuse… for some, it is true, for some it’s a alibi and as Anne FS said… everything was very well thought out… I do not believe at all she was sick… she thought she would outsmart everyone… but oh my God, how do you not smell like death everywhere you go?

I think there are some very different ideas about mental wellness being offered here. It is not a matter of an alibi, although in some legal disputes it may offer a way out. The definition of mentally healthy goes way beyond some courts definition that may get you out of being responsible for the act.
Anyone who does something like this is not healthy. Not all people that are unhealthy are incapable of some rational thought or actions. There are anorexics that attend grade school or a Schizophrenic can function very well at times.
No wonder society has such stigma around mental health issues if people only see it in terms of a defence case and are unwilling to acknowledge it because they are scared the act will not be vindicated.
Anyone who sleeps around dead animals and hoards is not well. To continually accumulate animals just to starve them is not logical and has no benefit to her. It is irrational and disturbing.
I hope she is never allowed to own animals again and they are removed from her care immediately. It is a horror story.
Michael Vick is a different case, one that shows a heartbreaking disregard for the animals lives but not irrational behavior. He didn’t leave dead animals lying around his house only to needlessly accumulate more.

How on Earth can someone have dead animals in a vehicle or where they are sleeping?

I just don’t understand.

I have said this repeatedly, this woman is not mentally ill, she is evil. People are so loath to acknowledge the existence of evil they make excuses for these people. Creating a rescue to raise funds to support your hobby isn’t sick, it is calculated evil. I would have had more respect for this woman if she’d dragged every rescue out back and put a bullet in its head rather than killing them via sheer calculated indifference.

EVIL.

No. Not buying it.

That’s like the old murder defense: to kill unless it’s in self defense, who would do that? You’d have to be crazy to kill. Therefore by definition of the act you committed you had a mental illness. Therefore murderers should not be punished but treated.

Anne Goland Shumate is like Michael Vick: knows exactly what she’s doing, knows that it is cruel, knows that what she’s doing is directly causing pain and suffering to animals who are entirely dependent on her, and knows also that what she’s doing is against the law, and DOES IT ALL ANYWAY.

She did not accumulate animals just to starve them. On the contrary, she had a plan. She accumulated animals in order to collect money from people who supported her rescue so she could specifically use that money for another purpose. It’s a perfectly logical scam: “I’ll find a way to get a lot of money free. Brilliant!”

Do you think Bernie Madoff is mentally ill? Nope, he’s a lying, cheating schemer. So is Anne Goland Shumate.
