Wow. Is it me or was that horse beyond tired and need to be pulled up rather than whipped within an inch of it’s life??
Eeeesh, terrible. Freaky way to get hurt as a spectator! Best wishes for the jockey and involved spectators.

What is your definition of being whipped within an inch of its life???
What a horrible accident and how very frightening for all involved.
Horse is running out to the right, the jockey is hitting him right handed, could be an effort to straighten him?

i saw that the jockey was trying to correct the lugging… i could be wrong though… it certainly was a surprising turn of events… so sorry to hear the horse didn’t make it, landing on concrete like that probably caused him to puncture a lung… poor thing. hope everyone else is okay.
Sorry, my brain switched horses. It was the horse who ended up winning who was hit about 10 times despite being well out front of the field.
It does appear the jockey on the horse in question was trying to prevent him from lugging out. My bad.

I don’t think the jockey could pull the horse up at that pace and moment. I think he knew he was losing control and that was why he was hitting, he was trying to get the horse to go forward and straighten since he probably could sense disaster at that pace.
I have seen this happen in a race . A horse can bolt and veer to the side, sometimes it can be mental, sometimes a cause, either way that had to be terrifying for the jockey as well.

He’s propped above the horse - all he can use is his right hand and left rein.
Landing on his back like that it is hard to imagine what wasn’t broken on the horse. Terrible The jockey was thrown clear, but yikes, that had to hurt. When the horse first veered to the right the jockey was able to get him back with a few hits. There was no stopping him the second time.
I think horses are known to have done things like that when they are having a heart attack or have some other terrible thing going on. Correct?
I’m thinking it was medical somehow…ghastly
