Horse allergic reaction to aloe vera juice?

Has anyone had an experience with a horse having a reaction to aloe vera juice (ingested)? My guy broke out in hives last week and has a fat leg and his face was a little swollen. After racking my brain, the only thing I can think that I gave him new was the aloe vera juice although I didn’t give him much at all. I googled and read that humans can sometimes have a reaction which includes skin rash/hives.

Has anyone else had their horse react like this to the juice? Just wondering if it was that or something else. Obviously I have stopped giving it to him. I’m hoping this is what caused it.

Thanks.

I know that aloe vera juice is sometimes given to help with allergies, but im guessing people or animals could be allergic to the juice too… probably pretty uncommon though.

I’m sure its VERY possible. I’ve never heard of anyone having a reaction, and I also give my mare 1/2-1c 2x daily.

Could it be related to bugs?

Good luck!

I was happy to find this post. We also suspect our horse had an allergic reaction to aloe Vera juice. He was having some gas colic symptoms at first and then popped hives. We thought originally it was a change of bedding even though we were weeks into that change. He’s now on a 2nd round of dex. This time with the aloe eliminated from his diet. After racking our brains we realized the aloe addition timed out the closest to the symptoms. We were only giving him 1.5 ounces per day. Here’s hoping this is the culprit!
