Horse Appraiser

I am thinking of donating my horse to my old college. I am in the Williamsburg, VA area and need to get my horse appraised. Does anyone know where to find an appraiser?

Ask around on the breeding board… The people I know who do that are also breed show handlers & breeders.

In most instances a letter of value from an experienced professional will be acceptable to most schools.

They have an 800 number and can put you in touch with certified equine appraisers in your area. Do try to engage the services of an appraiser that specializes in your discipline.

Please be aware that the IRS may require an appraisal by a certified equine appraiser if you are going to claim the donation on your federal income taxes. You can visit the IRS website to find the forms that must be signed by the licensed appraiser and the appropriate instructions. Of course a certified equine appraiser will typically supply their own forms.

Hi Jack16,

I am a certified senior equine appraiser based in North Carolina. Several years ago, it was customary to have any horse professional value a horse for a donation to non-profit organizations. Unfortunately, this system was abused and the IRS now requires a qualified appraisal from a certified equine appraiser if the horse’s value is worth more than $5,000. Many are unfamiliar with this rule change, and I have encountered several cases where the IRS did not accept appraisals made by horse professionals with no certification.

If you would like further information on the donation process, please visit my website at www.EquiAppraisal.com. Hope this helps!
