Hello,
I’m in the process of getting quotes to build a small 36 by 36 barn at my house so I can bring my horses home. To stay within budget it seems like I need to make the choice of going with a shingle (vs standard metal) roof or adding a 8 ft lean to outside my Dutch doors. What do you guys recommend?
We have one of each. I prefer the shingled barn, it is cooler in the summer and less noisy during rain/hail/wind storms when tree branches rub the roof …the horses do not care, they just like to eat.
I’d want the overhang, no question. Dutch doors without an overhang are not NEARLY as functional as dutch doors WITH an overhang.
I prefer the metal roof with insulation on the inside. The insulation is more for humidity drips than anything but it’s a win-win.
We are frequently privy to high speed straight line winds and have already replaced all the shingles on the back 1/4 SW side of the house. It was costly:(
The metal barn roof is chugging along like a storm trooper:)
i have a 20 x 24 overhang going into the paddock from one stall. It also has a metal roof and insulation on the underneath:)
FYI on an overhang: Do NOT let the contractors attach the overhang to the barn. Make them build it as a standalone and put a strip of flashing between the barn and overhang. That way if a good wind does come along and take the overhang, it won’t take part of your barn with it:). Ours has been standing for nearly 14 years without issue ----- even in the high winds we get.
We have shingles on our roof to match the house and I’m very happy with them. We also get some extreme winds (mouth of the Columbia Gorge) and have not had a problem with the roof in the 10 or so years the barn has been up. Quiet and insulated, it was the best choice for us. The only downside for us has been having to treat it for moss once a year or so. It is quite high and steep, so we have pros come for that rather than risk our clumsy necks up there.
Love my overhang off the stall side of barn as well and would not want to build a barn without. Ours is 10’ and I think the size is perfect. I do not have dutch doors – in fact, I took off the doors on the stalls (big sliders) as we never used them! I just have stall gates that we can close to keep the horses in a stall if needed (rare) or to keep them out of the stalls during the day. Then they can have the overhang as shelter, which opens onto the dry paddocks.
