Horse Boarding near Katy, Tx

Hello!

I’m relocating to Katy, TX this month and will be bringing my 19 year old Missouri Fox Trotter down in October. She just had high ring bone surgery and should be fully recovered. I am not looking for a competition barn. Just somewhere I can do some gentle riding since she’s going to be recovering. Lots of pasture and a careful eye in case she does have any leg complications. I also don’t go out to the barn every day so I need a place that will feed and blanket. Suggestions, places to avoid, and pricing if you know it would be very helpful.

What is “lots of pasture” and what is “a careful eye” and how much are you willing to spend? As Houston-proper bleeds into Katy and Fulshear, prices are going up and ameneties are doing down. However, there are a number of nice barns out of the Kay and Fulshear area. I suggest emailing (and then visiting) all of the barns you can with your requirements and also asking if the barns know of any other facilities that might be good for an older, recovering horse. There are alot of private barns in the area. Inquire with the local dressage and h/j community, both of which are large and active. Good luck!

I have seen some boarding facilities that offer grass paddocks, which is not full pasture turn out. I would like her to have full pasture turn-out at least half the day. What I mean by a careful eye, is that someone will have eyes on her at least once a day in case she starts to show signs of swelling from her surgery and that they will be on the phone quickly to let me know. I currently pay $325.00/month and that includes feeding twice a day, turn out, free inclusion of any additives I provide, and stall cleaning. I would be willing to go a little higher, but I think $400 would be my max. Again, I am not into competitions anymore, I don’t want a flashy show barn and the price that comes with it.

Most places are going to be higher much higher. Also, while the horses are going in and out to pasture having someone actually ‘qualified’ to give your horse a once-over every day will be few and far between with you only paying board. The stable hands shouldn’t have that much responsibility.

I don’t have any suggestions as I currently keep my horses at a competition/training barn in Katy, but wanted to welcome you!
I work right outside of Katy and live in Spring, TX - lots of horses here!!
