Horse boarding northern Illinois?

I’m currently looking for horse boarding in northern Illinois, the situation at the current barn isn’t working out for my horse’s needs anymore. I’m an amateur owner on a budget, I currently attend college and I need someone to ride my horse while I’m away at school (preferably a trainer, not shareboarder/leaser, I’d like to have full control to be able to come home and ride whenever/show whenever). Turnout is a must for my horse. Full care isn’t necessary, I just need a training program to keep my horse ridden 4-5 days a week while I’m gone.

I haven’t really been able to show in the past 3 years, I’d like to get back into showing, either NIHJA or A is fine with me.

Thanks so much!

Have you looked at Sunflower Farms in Bristol, Wi. I know it is in Wisconsin but it is on the state line and has lots of great turnout. They have amazing trainers that do NIHJA like Becky Zinke of Fair Chance Farm. If you want to stick with the A’s Michelle Lyons and the Arza’s do those. If this is too far a more exact location and price range would be helpful.

Southern Wisconsin would be do-able, I think Sunflower might be a bit busy for my guy though, he’s a really sensitive horse when it comes to commotion.
For a location, probably Lake/McHenry/Cook/Kane county in IL and then like anything in Southeastern Wisconsin, Waukesha/Milwaukee/Walworth/Kenosha.

For price, I’d like the board to be under $750, if board was under $500 then I could drive a bit farther to get to a place.

check out www.crosswindsfarm.net

They host several NIHJA shows on the property and they have trainers to keep your horse tuned up for you. Board plus turnout plus training rides would be within your budget.

Farm is located in McHenry County, just a few miles of Intersate 90 for easy access.

Happenstance (www.happenstancefarm.com) farm in Zion? Not sure if that is close, but Vanessa is great and it is a really nice facility with good turnout.

Sunflower is actually not busy but it sounds like it might be out of your price range. It sounds like your going to need to look a lithe further out to find something in your price range. Crosswinds would be a good choice or other places in that area they will be cheaper.

I’d be happy to give you a tour of our facility. If its turnout you are looking for you won’t find better turnout than we have at millcreek. Feel free to PM me if you are interested. www.millcreekfarm.net

You’re not going to find much for board under $700 in any of the IL counties you mentioned unless you go fairly far west, say into Woodstock. Most places in IL with a reputable H/J show program start around $800 for board only. That doesn’t include any training or lessons.

Your place looks really nice and reasonably priced for the Chicago area. Just putting that out there, as someone who has lived in Chicago.

OP - you are going to be very hard pressed to find something that meets your requirements in that price range, but the above looks pretty darn good! Even in SE WI, you won’t find much in your price range that also has a resident trainer.

Thanks!!

Like everyone has said, board for a respectable facility in N. IL is going to run baseline $750+.

Happenstance is WAY out of the OP’s price range. It costs about $2,000 a month to board there. Hidden Knoll Farm and Autumn Road Farm @ HK in Wadsworth, while a gorgeous facility, again is about $2,000+ a month in boarding. Sunflower is about $850 if you board in the “hunter/jumper” barn section. Country Ridge Stables in Mundelein is another beautiful facility. Not quite sure on pricing, but my guess is that it’s probably around $850+. (http://countryridgestables.com/illinoishorseboarding.html)
Another barn is Gem Stone Farm out of Springfield Stables in Mettawa. That facility is almost on par with Hidden Knoll Farm. On their website, boarding is listed at $1275 for basic…but that doesn’t include turnout; you’d have to add another $425 for that and full-care.

The only barn that I can think of that is around $500-600 a month for boarding is Stonehedge Farm in Union Grove, WI. Unfortunately, it is an eventing barn, so showing would be a no go.

Good luck!

Isn’t happenstance in the 900+ range? I thought when I looked there it was.

Look into tukaway farm. Private beautiful facility… Sometimes doesnt have room available. Worth a shot, im your price range with TONS of turn out. They have a website

Everbold Farm Kirkland IL

Chicago Stables - Legacy USA Dressage is located 25 miles SW of downtown Chicago. Past clinicians included Kathy Connelly, US Olympian Lendon Gray, and Anke Herbert. Both have horses for lease, on consignment and offer training programs both short and long term. Understand they just became an AHS approved training, sale, and in-hand facility. Worth taking a look, being close to Chicago and all. www.LegacyUSAstables.com or call 630-325-4230.

ThoroughQuest Acres is in Barrington and it’s a beautiful facility. 2 indoors, outdoor, turnout plus a great barn and care. I don’t think it was too expensive there either, maybe around $600. They also hold shows there throughout the year, and attent outside shows frequently. Dundee and her daugher T’Neil both ride, train and teach.

Tower Hill Stables out in Hampshire, board is less than 500$. They host many shows including NIHJA’s and show on the A’s. Might be far for you, but something to look into. they have a website towerhillstables.net

Heide Casciaro and Jessica Pilarski are wonderful at Tievoli Farm in Woodstock, IL.

The board is $730 with plenty of turn out. They attend A and B rated shows. Heide hosts at least one B and one ISC show a year at her facility.

She has flexible plans for horse care, training and showing. Great place!!
