What functionality would you like to see from online horse databases? Which ones do you like? Not like? Why? I would also like to know if you feel their information is accurate. Doing research for my presentation in Denver for the NIAA on Horse ID. Thanks for the feedback!
Honestly what I would like to see is more information on sport performance. I’ve always liked what the database that Hippomundo bought was able to do with linking actual competition results to horse and pedigree and then linking the pedigree to the ancestors, going as far back and as widely as possible. Hippomundo is unfortunately far from complete.
Accurate pedigree information is crucial.
Of course the basic information (registered name, changed name/s, UELN, date of birth, color, registry, country of birth and country of performance/residence, list of owners and riders, FEI # if available) and breeding history. For that HorseTelex together with the FEI database, are good models. For me HorseTelex doesn’t have enough competition data, and the FEI database can’t be searched through sire or dam, if they are even in the database.
I’m sure that the JC databases have all the information one could even want on TBs, but it’s very time limited and it is costly.
Thanks for the response! Helps a lot. How do you feel about the accuracy of databases that allow users to edit content?
Get a user for the German FN database and see what it holds. Apart from one or the other search routine that I would like to have as a user (and where the data is there only reports need to be created), it is perfect. It holds breeding results (licensing and SPT results), sport results and one can easily research the family of ones horses or horses offered on the market.
It may be even possible that the FN or the company who developped it sells the software on. So there is not really a Need to invest money and create a new wheel as we say in German.
Than there is VIT in Verden VIT.DE.
They hold a database that is relevant for breeding and holds the data of ALL big German registries. Including data like bred mares, their offspring etc.
As online database there is horsetelex that has a rather good database - quite accurate (due to long time updates by users before it was closed).
Editing is only allowed on existing entries with sending an email.
FEI Database I am not too happy with. Even if a horse is registered in a WB registry and it is entered ther with that info - it does not hold Pedigree and or breeder. I have bred three horses that are in it and only one holds pegigree and breeder even though in both cases the registry is given - so people who entered the horse there knew. On horse of the two competing GP and the other Intermediare. The third is young and competed at World Champion Ships for dressage and has complete info in FEI DB.

Good morning. I am a breeder from Belgium (www.harasdelavie.be) and I’d like to give you some more information about Hippomundo. It is the plan of Hippomundo to bring all data of all studbooks from all over the world together and link this data with sport results. Now the data of BWP, AES, Z and a Brasilian Studbook has been imported. Hippomundo is on speaking terms with several other Studbooks directly (KWPN, SF, Swedish Studbook, Irish Studbook etc) and with WBFSH. If horses start to compete at an international level (FEI) their data is also imported. People can also send a copy of the passport of a horse to Hippomundo. I hope Hippomundo succeeds in their plan because there will be a lot of trustfull information which will help the breeders a lot. You can f.e. have a look how many offspring of a certain stallion are competing at a certain level, you can find name of breeders etc etc. I find it very interesting but as you say at this moment far from complete.
Well rather strange - I can find one of the three horses mentioned above. But only father side is maintained, even though in FEI base all is included.
