What functionality would you like to see from online horse databases? Which ones do you like? Not like? Why? I would also like to know if you feel their information is accurate. Doing research for my presentation in Denver for the NIAA on Horse ID. Thanks for the feedback!
I and others on in the business and sport of. Acronyms are handy but not universally understood. I’ve had to look up a lot used in various threads. Had no idea what NIAA ( National Institute for Animal Agriculture) stood for and had to look it up.
A bit more specific then “online horse databases” In the TB and breeding and racing industry there are LOTS of data, statistics on lots of different aspects. I would bet more than any other breed.
As far as TB horse ID that’s simple. The description of any registered TB can be found on their Jockey Club foal registration certificate.Which is verified by DNA testing as part of the registration process. If the horse was put into race training and had official workouts they would have been lip tattooed. The tattoo letter/number is recorded with their foal certificate registration number.
Starting in next year all TB foals that are registered with the JC will be “chipped”.
I personally rely most heavily on Equibase for information. I am not sure about accuracy, but it definitely seems to be the most comprehensive to me. I usually only access the publicly available information. From what I understand, the paid subscriptions offer even more detailed PP information, video and etc.
Good luck with your presentation!
I use Equibase all the time. It has most of the information I need as it pertains to TB’s. It seems to be very accurate. I also use pedigreequery.com to look for offspring of TB’s although it isn’t entirely accurate in that not all offspring from the last 1-2 years are in there. Another feature I like are the photograhps so you can see what various horses looked like.
I’ve also found Horsetelex to be very good for looking up warmbloods, which registry they are with and what their pedigrees are along with the blood%
I like that I can do hypomating on both pedigree query and Horsetelex.
