How do you get a horse conditioned to wear standing wraps? My horse rubs them continuously. I’ve tried painters tape to secure the Velcro, but not much improvement. Any suggestions? Do I try slowly conditioning ie wear for 15 minutes take off, slowly increase time? Try polo wraps when riding? I would like the horse to be able to tolerate wraps if a need arises.
I’d use boots for riding and not worry about wrapping. If you ever have an injury use a grazing muzzle or a neck cradle
I use boots for riding, but was thinking of for wrapping when at a show, shipping, or if there is ever a medical need.
My QH disliked the non-stretchy standing wraps over no bows. He was fine with the knit type wraps over no bows, pulled slightly less snugly than I usually do.
What kind of wraps are you using?
I had a horse the same way. Great horse, he never got over it and otherwise great behavior. I just never used them. I had him for 12 years until he passed. Completely fine with boots.
Acclimate him. I started wrapping my mare’s legs when she was not quite a yearling, so I don’t just wrap my mare’s legs when there is a need. When she was eating, I would periodically wrap and unwrap her legs. Now she’s completely used to having her legs wrapped. I want to note that she also hated having her legs wrapped at first because it was new and probably felt weird. But, I wrapped her legs so often that now she’s used to me wrapping her legs.
A hint my father passed on to me was to wet the leg before wrapping. Apparently it makes it less itchy. Other than that, the only way to acclimate them to bandages is by wearing them.
