Horse Eats Own Hoof

Has anyone ever experienced their horse eating it’s own hoof trimmings? My farrier has never seen a horse do this either. I have 5 horses and one tries to obsessively eat it’s hoof trimmings if I don’t sweep it up right away.

Trimmings? I wouldn’t worry, and you should be sweeping up right away!

Now if it was gnawing off its live hoof you might have a situation.

Some gnaw off their own chestnuts.

Horses will nibble on branches fences bedding and eat mud. Might be a sign of nutritional deficiencies might just be a mouthy horse.

You need to hire a psychologist immediately. Your horse is a dog.

Thanks Scribbler!! By right away I mean as he’s still trimming, lol. I wondered about a deficiency, she has done this since I owned her but today she grabbed a huge piece and ate it. I know my dog can’t digest it so my concern was how good that really was for her. She’s not overly mouthy, just obsessed with hoof.

The cover of this book promised much, the content fell short…

Couple things to rule out, maybe:

Is the horse getting enough salt?

Is the horse getting enough protein?

That’s kind of weird, but…horses are weird

She has a redmond rock salt lick inside and out and it seems to last the same amount of time as the others. She gets Tribute essential K which is very high in protein so I dunno…totally weird I have to agree!

My horse takes the opportunity to eat his chestnuts while his leg is up on the hoof stand.

Easy peasy- Just get some of that icky tasting nail polish that teenaged nail chewers use, put it on right before farrier comes. Warn farrier.
