Horse feed comparison?

I know that people have very strong opinions about their favorite brand of grain, and that often makes it very difficult to pick out feed.

I’ve been researching senior grains and the nutrient profiles are often wildly different yet the feed ratio is often the same.

I’m interested in a comparison chart to compare the different brands and their ingredients. Say Purina, Tribute, Nutrena, Triple Crown. Is there one like that out there? An unbiased look at fat and protein would be great.

Some folks on here have access to a spread sheet made up to do that comparison. I live in Canada and don’t have access to American brands so have never downloaded it any time it’s flown past in a thread.

This is a sheet that a few of us put together. I’m sure there are a few things that have been updated since it was last updated, but we do try to make modifications to things as we hear about them (meaning, we don’t go searching for updates )

This is awesome! I
have my own mix, can I add it to this spreadsheet for personal comparison? Or a new sheet for Canadian feeds?

Well, probably Canadians need to do their own sheet!

Problem is, we don’t have nationally distributed brands.

I live on the West Coast. We have two mills. One is our local grocery and feed co-op. The other is part of a chain of mills in Canada and the US that makes feeds for local markets. There is no distribution of American feed brands here though some supplements are imported.

If you email the two mills you can get detailed nutritional information. In general the co-op makes “modern” fixed ingredient low NSC feeds, high fat feeds, etc. The other mill is more old school and makes unfixed ingredient “guaranteed nutrition” feeds that may use corn, and have higher NSC. Honestly though I am finding it most cost effective to feed beet pulp, alfalfa cubes, oats, flax and Vitamin mineral supplement rather than a bagged feed. We don’t have a ration balancer that covers all the bases of the VMS I use.

I think you can save a copy for yourself, then you can make updates

If you want to make the updates as a separate sheet, you can share the sheet back to me and I’ll add it to ours - then it will appear in that link

Anyone is free to copy this sheet, use it as a template, add in your feeds in a separate sheet, and send me the link to that sheet. I’ll work on adding them to ours.

Commercial feeds only please (to send to me). Even if they are only regionally available, that’s fine. I just won’t add anything that’s a mix that a random mill in a town makes
