Horse Feed

My gelding has been on Blue Seal Sentinel LS for the past 2 years and he is doing wonderfully. He is usually a hard keeper , and not a good eater. This is the first feed where we have been able to keep him in good weight AND on a ration small enough that he will eat it.

I am moving the boys and the closest dealer that carries the feed is almost an hour away. The local feed and hay supplier (who I will be using for hay) recommended Nutrena Proforce Fuel. On a brief look protein, fat, and fiber all look like a match.

However, He has been on “similar” feeds before and not done nearly as well. When he was on Fibergized Omega he had to eat 2x the feed and was not holding his weight as well. Triple Crown Senior (plus cool calories which are not needed now) kept the weight on but again at double or more the volume.

Does anyone have any experience or advice with these feeds?

I always think ulcers when a horse won’t eat. I have great results with free choice hay/pasture and TC Senior with hard keepers, and never had an issue with pickiness.

Nutrena’s Pro Force Fuel is a higher NSC than the Blue Seal feed. 20% versus 14% if I recall correctly.

He does have ulcers that are being treated. He also has access to 24x7 hay. Alph Alpha in a hay net in his stall and fescue on a round bale outside.

I have the other aspects of his diet under control. I just have no experience with this feed and I want to know what other people have experienced.

Love Proforce Fuel. Hard keeper 22 yr old mare is looking much better on this feed than she did on the senior feeds. Like that it’s 13% fat. NSC @ 20 isn’t high. Great quality feed.

If what you are feeding now works for you , I would drive the 2 hour round trip and get a months worth ( or more) at a time . It isn’t worth the headache to try and duplicate it.

Have you asked directly if any of the new feed stores will order/carry the Blue Seal? When I wanted to find Triple Crown, no one carried it in my area.
So I visited the store I was buying my hay at and talked to the feed mgr. who did some checking and LO and Behold he could stock it for me. Now they have many, many customers for TC and they carry all the different types.

So you might want to suggest this to your feed supplier since no one within 50-60 miles is selling it.

my only concern with the proforce is that it does require a slightly larger serving size. I’ve fed it, and my horses did well on it, but I ended up switching back to the legends performance pellets.

Do what you can to keep him on the Sentinel … That is a good feed!
