My morning began by finding my beloved gelding eating out of the grain bag inside a plastic garbage can I did not lock properly and I apparently did not latch his stall door properly last night either. I constantly fear doing something stupid/forgetful that would harm my animals and now I have. Quarantine and record breaking crappy cold weather already got me down and now this. Got vet out immediately, she tubed him, charcoal, banamine. Reduced rations tonight, no pasture or grain, “watch him”. Doubt I will sleep much tonight. Pray for no founder. Jingles please…
Jingles!
I hope he is fine and you get through this without to much wear and tear.
Lots of jingles for both of you!!!
Hoping it all comes out ok. We’ve all made mistakes!
Thanks…I am feeling the guilt.
Any bute going forward, icing his feet?
We all make mistakes, sometimes huge ones. Don’t go down the rabbit hole of guilt and blame
Oh, and exercise - work him as often as you can each day. 2 30-minute sessions is better than 1 60-min session. The more often you can get him moving out, not just wandering the pasture, the better.
JINGLES & AO for your gelding !
((hugs)) laced with patience & ‘you can manage this’ for his worried owner ~
sounds like you have a good vet ~
- I am a believer in the benefits of “ICING’ feet ~ or an ICE stall ~ during the first days ~
and BUTE for awhile as needed
and Movement on Soft footing as tolerated ~
Oh, goodness, this is every horse owners greatest fear I think! I’ve been there-- it makes you feel stupid and guilty. It’s ok to feel it, but don’t wallow in it! The actions you’ve taken are all the right ones, stay vigilant and give yourself a tiny pat for moving so quickly to treat your boy.
Hugs, and jingles from the PNW! Please update us, too. We are here for you!!
If colic watch, yes I 100% agree with this. But would you still recommend this when the concern is founder? Advice I’ve always been given is deeply bedded stall, icing, etc to support the hoof. So just curious the rationale for exercise? Here to learn!
exercise / movement to increase blood flow in feet but
on deep soft footing / just some (no tight turning) moving
light as tolerated and throughout the day ~ gradual increase
GRADUAL …with continual monitoring and modification as needed
ALL ^ dependent on the individual and situation and Pain Ӣ IMHO
The exercise is actually to help prevent laminitis for some of the same reasons as colic - keep things moving, get it out of the body. Exercise also helps the body deal with the sudden intake of sugars. Of course this does depend on there being no laminitis already - definitely don’t force movement there.
Also, I would take his temperature a couple times a day, for a week or so, as a rise might indicate a toxin issue.
We have all been there in one way or another. A metal can with a tight fitting lid is harder for them to get into. I agree lots of exercise is good. I hope he will be alright.
Thanks all. He seems okay, no signs of discomfort, eating, pooping. Banamine twice a day, no grain or grass next 4 days. Thanks for jingles, working so far.
thanks Rubygirl I am " plum wore out".
I bet you are. Hopefully tonight you can get some rest. He probably slept like a baby last night while you were watching over him.
More than 24 hours out and no issues? I would start breathing again - carefully!
My old horse had a grain overload at a boarding stable. Through a number of their errors it went untreated for 8 hours. He seemed fine at first, but by the next day had a raging fever. Endotoxemia. He required extensive treatment for over a week before we were sure he would make it and not develop laminitis. Your fast action likely saved your horse from this!
good update …happy for you two !
