He’s just never loved it, but now is completely leaving it and it’s being wasted. I’m about to open a brand new bag and so now is my chance LOL! Should I trade it in for TC LITE to see if he likes that better or should I buy something yummy to mix in with it? Both have been suggested in the past, I hate to add in too many calories because he is now a fatty:rofl:( but is still young, needs nutrition). I’ve already tried alfalfa pellets and he simply picks those out and then leaves the 30%, I have not tried making it into complete mush so that that couldn’t happen, but my feeling is he still wouldn’t like it. I really want him to like his yummies, but still have good nutrition. Help!
Try a Ration Balancer from another company, of even Triple Crown’s other balancer - Gold.
I had a similar problem - one mare just stopped eating the TC RB for no known reason. I ended up mixing it with TC Complete - a textured ‘sweet’ feed. She loved that and ate a half/half mix without issue.

How much of the TC are you feeding? I ask because you’ll need to feed at least 2lb of the Lite, most likely, which is more calories than the usual 1lb of a balancer, if calories are a concern.
TC Balancer Gold is lower protein, so if that’s a concern you may need to add protein, or at least add some amino acids, ie Nutramino or Tri-Amino
It’s up to you. TC Sr is typically really delicious, so adding a cup or 2 may be all that’s needed, though it then requires scooping out of 2 bags/bins.
Try another RB. Many posts on here where horses just start refusing the TC 30. Return the unopened bag and try something more palatable.
What would be the criteria for judging whether or not the lower protein content Would be a problem? He’s getting about a pound right now. Still a fairly young horse, if that makes any difference.
The thought crossed my mind, but I hate to add any more calories or sugars.
How old? The younger they are, the higher their protein needs relative to their body weight, which means it’s really difficult to get it from grass, or hay unless there’s some alfalfa involved.
Without a forage test you don’t know
4 year old. Just went butt high again, another growth spurt. Does get a 50/50 mix of alfalfa to grass/Teff hay.
50/50 alf should be PLENTY of protein for pretty much any horse
My large pony hated the TC 30% so I just mixed a handful of TC Senior in it. Yes, it’s extra calories but it wasn’t enough to where I was concerned. Eventually, I was able to wean her off the TC Senior. Now that she’s on the TC Gold Balancer she inhales it. As others have said the only concern would be the lower protein content.
We did have to swap to TC Lite at the beginning of the pandemic due to my feed store not getting any Balancer for almost two months and she loved it. As others have said I did have to feed more to her to make up the proper nutrition profile.
My older QH, who had never been a picky eater, absolutely hated the TC30. He just would not eat it regardless of what we mixed with it. We switched to another brand, and he ate that very well.
