Horse Haulers from Hell "Wellington Equine Express"

Just another fly by night on uship. Put it in your sales contract that you won’t ship on any uship carriers and you will solve 99% of your shipping issues. These type of outfits only survive when people are trying to save mega bucks. You get what you pay for.

If you are really a concerned customer and not an employee of/somehow associated with the company, you do know that a whole slew of internet strangers has your number now, right?

Not that I’d ever prank call. :: shifty eyes ::

Interesting that Wellington Equine Express created a member account on the same day as the concerned customer poster above, yet hasn’t posted under that account name in response to either thread?

Conspiracy theorists unite…LOL

Hear, hear, Laurie.

Let this thread be a strong message to [those] in the horse business. YOU WILL BE OUTED. Word will get out [edit].
Well, Well, when you google the name of this carrier this thread shows right up so that’s the best revenge.
Good going Cothers!

I see your point AND I think sometimes its not to easy to find haulers who go way off the beaten track out West here we have some “big stretches”. And not all priced inexpensive haulers are sub standard in their equipment and people. Also, from what I understand the price I this case was “going rate” not low. My farm is 2 miles off a major interstate but not all are that easily located and most are probably 30-500 miles off a major freeway. Also, I don’t think this haul connection originated on uship. I got quoted $1 a mile if the delivery was not more than 20 miles off a freeway from “Wellington Equine Express” in the beginning, curious for another client for a 500 pound animal. Is that super cheap? I think the prices vary from areas as do permits and labor costs and fuel.

I don’t think there is an easy answer but to be sure to get photos, bios, safety preparations and recommendations from the shippers customers ahead of time. I have never personally hired a shipper and skipped those steps except my new ones, fire, medical and safety equipment. Many shippers have customer feedback right on their web sites and I call to check up if I have not used them before when I am the one making the contract.

For what it’s worth, we checked into the email address associated with Lori V.'s account, and search results do appear to correlate with the comments she’s made, so let’s put the conspiracy theories to rest, in terms of her being an alter for a company representative, etc.

We also merged the two current active threads pertaining to this company to keep the comments together and avoid redundancy.

I’m batting 50-50 with Uship (one no-show ripoff, one excellent last-minute haul replacing the no-show who even blanketed Lucky for the ride). A lot of people use it because in some places, it’s hard to get haulers. Michigan in particular is tough because besides being big it’s an oddball state–middle of the country, but you don’t just pass through it because it’s surrounded by water. A lot of haulers just don’t go up the middle very much. It’s important for people to review on-line and out bad companies because there are great small haulers and awful ones and the awful ones stay in business because people are afraid of naming names.

And this is exactly why a well maintained truck and horse trailer are on my list of barn “must haves”. I don’t have to hire out for hauling.

If I were in the OPs position, I would have refused to load the horse - regardless of the ownership status. I would have told the buyer that to put a horse on this trailer would, in my mind, be aiding in neglect/abuse and that I would never knowingly endanger any living being - whether I owned them or not. If this were a dealbreaker, I would gladly refund any money but I would have sent the trailer driver away immediately. No phone call to the buyer to ask their permission. No illegal/non-roadworthy rigs are welcome on my property TYVM. I would have sent the trailer off then called the buyer.

If the buyer really wanted to push it, they could call the trailer back to my barn and also the police who you would be happy to have inspect said trailer and run tag information. My guess is that these guys aren’t even properly registered with the DOT and therefore, hauling for hire illegally.

Sometimes, you just need to grow a set and stand by your convictions.

I agree with the above post. I do not agree with the OP that she had no legal right to prevent the horse from getting on the trailer. In my opinion, the OP was legal responsible for that horse’s well being while it was in her care, and until it gets on the trailer, its in her care. I would not have let the horse onto the trailer, and I would have told the owner why, and sent the hauler away while we made new, appropriate arrangements for the horse. If the new owner objected, she could take me to court for it, but the horse would still have a safe ride off the farm and I would feel irresponsible not caring for the horse enough to prevent it getting onto that trailer.

If the horse had arrived irrevocably damaged, I can’t imagine all the money lawyers would be making right now.

Glad you posted, though!

How did the horse arrive? Was he injured? I must have missed that information in the posts…

The histrionics here is …alarming

I used Wellington Express back in August to transport my blind horse from Bedford, NY to N. CA. I have nothing but good things to say about their company and the people that work there. Spoke to Dawn many times and she was very understanding with my feelings. This was very hard for me to do send my horse that I rescued across country to a sanctuary. KJ was/is all about the good of the horse, the sanctuary was also very impressed it was horses first if it takes a little longer to get there so be it. He sent pictures and we were in touch. He handled her very gently. I definitely would use them again actually they are the only transport I would use. Remember there are 3 sides to a story his, hers and the truth. And to bash a company isn’t very classy. I have nothing but wonderful things to say about Wellington Express and if you need further information I as a concerned customer would be happy to speak to you. 203-324-7081 CT. Lori[/QUOTE]

Do we have a houseguest?

It is easy to say that OP shouldn’t have allowed the haul, but she is right. She had no ownership of the animal at that point and could be sued. For all those saying let yourself be sued because the court will likely side with you because the haul was unsafe. …have you ever had to defend yourself in court? It is expensive. It may not go your way because you may get a judge that follows the contract to the letter. She stated she wished she didn’t have to let the horse go, she attempted to convince the owner and was stuck allowing the current owner to make the call whether she agreed with it or not. She also changed her contract to avoid this in the future.

Look How fast this thread took off. Do you really think the OP wants the reputation of selling a horse and not allowing the shipper to pick it up? Do you think future customers will go to the trouble of hearing both sides? No, they won’t. They may decide to find another breeder to avoid potential issues.

As for Lori V. I am sure this company IS CAPABLE of providing a nice transport in a nice trailer. The issue seems to be they sell the load when it is more profitable to do so. In your case maybe it was a profitable cross country load and the OP’s was expendable.

Lori, I checked your Facebook page and read about Gracie. She was picked up by someone different…not Wellington Equine Express or Mr Koch. Your guy was from TX. K J.
So you are defending someone you have no clue about… though he may be an independent also under some affiliation with Deer Horn…who appears to be trying to become a shipper broker.

Here’s what my research shows1) I googled Wellington Equine Express and Dawn and telephone number …came up with Deer Horn Transportation…whose Facebook page is looking for drivers with rigs to join them. There is a post that says x,y and z are no longer affiliated because they misrepresented themselves. MR. KOCH was not named.

Wellington Equine Express sounds impressive . Wellington is a huge horse community with world class jumping and dressage (Wellington Equestrian Festival).
But apparently Mr Koch is registered out of Lantana FL …a residential area duplex propriety owned by someone else. ( maybe he rents?)

This confuses me http://safer.fmcsa.dot.gov/query.asp?searchtype=ANY&query_type=queryCarrierSnapshot&query_param=USDOT&query_string=2526833. Looks like out of service??? You must be able to get copy of inspection??

When I googled the number and Dawn, I came up with Deer Horn Transport and their Facebook page is soliciting rigs to join them. The latest post disclaims several people ( others…not Mr Koch) for misrepresenting themselves!!! So there are more!
The person you contract with may just broker your shipment to an unknown and/or misrepresented entity.

You really need to be careful and specifically ask if the rig is company owned and drivers employed by said company and not contracted!!!

OP , sorry you had to experience the heart wrench of the experience and you are right to “out” them. However, you need to be careful HOW you say what and only say provable things so you can’t be sued for libel.

And I read her Facebook page. She , from what I can figure out, just didn’t have same shipper though the web is getting more complicated.
