Horse Hoof Growing Sideways?

Hello everyone! Let me preface this by my horse has had some lameness issues in the past, but on a different leg, so I know this problem has no correlation.

So in the spring my gelding continuously pulled shoes due to the moist conditions. I ended up deciding to pull them, (he is only used a few days a week on the trail and only had front shoes) I have him on a very consistent trimming schedule to make the barefoot transition as easy as possible on him.

The problem arises on his left front hoof. The past two months or so of new growth are nice and healthy, growing perfectly straight down, the problem is all the hoof below that is now growing down slightly crooked. But it is starting to cause him severe pain, he can barely walk. I was wondering jf anyone else has had a similar issue arise and if it has anything to do with his shoes having been pulled. Farrier’s next scheduled appointment is on the second of next month, just trying to get a few answers before then. Thank you so much in advance!

If your horse is so lame it can “barely walk”, it needs to b seen by a professional before August 2nd.

My answer “before then” is to get the horse seen by a competent farrier and possibly a vet before then.

I’m not one to keep a horse in “severe pain” for over a week.

Thank you for the advice, I should have also added I’ve been talking back and forth with my farrier about the issue at this time as well to get the appointment moved up since my main focus is to make my boy comfortable again. Just trying to see if anyone has had a similar experience since I could not find anything similar upon looking it up.

I am actually kind of curious. Do you have a picture by chance?

I experienced something kind of similar, but it was mostly due to poor trimming.

Should see a Vet. Sooner rather than later…

Call the vet immediately! A horse that can barely walk is an emergency call.

If your horse is truly reluctant to walk, there could be a major problem. Call the vet. It could be something entirely unrelated to the farrier’s work. And if it is related to the farrier’s work, your vet may be able to give you and your farrier some guidance to set things straight.

The hoof only grows from the coronet. If the hoof is crooked below new growth, I would be very concerned that what you are seeing is that the horse’s coffin bone has rotated. This is something that is very painful and very serious, so I will add to the list of people saying the horse needs a vet ASAP.
