I haven’t read the book in years but I liked it.
To me this is a wonderful example of Disney taking a book written for adults and turning it into a classic family film.
What happened to the girl who played the daughter? What was her name?
Also liked seeing the Saddlebreds and h/j at the same show. That doesn’t happen too much any more, but used to be common.

I went to the Internet Movie Data Base. The daughter, Helen Bolton, was played by Ellen Janov. She died in a fire at 22 years of age.

The movie that started me riding…I do believe this was Kathy Kushner, the horse I’m a little less certain, but perhaps Abereli.

I love that movie, I showed it one day with my kids. They were amazed how things have changed since then. No elastic strap on your helmet, cars pulling trailers ect.
Someone mentioned about the saddle horses and hunters together at a show, DEVON! They still do both and then throw the coaches in. No wonder our leadline pony was freaked out when the shakey tails were being led around. :lol:
So, has anyone named their horse aspercel? 
No, but I once knew someone who named their cat Speedy Alka-Seltzer.

The spectators all dressed nice for the WIHS.
I’m old enough to remember when you dressed for the shows at the Garden, WIHC, Harrisburg. Damn, there was nothing like the old MSG for spectators, even if the venue left something to be desired for horses.
Can someone remind me of Aspercel’s competiton at WIHS, the gallant rider and his the lovely black mare?

Does anyone know who did the bareback riding in the scene where Aspie runs off with Dean Jones on his back? I thought that was fabulous for many reasons.
I talked to somebody who said he did that riding sequence, but I’ve heard of somebody else who said the same thing! :lol:
Most of the movie was shot in California, with Flintridge Riding Club being used for some scenes. As I understand it, the bareback rider was Kenny Nordstrom.
The movie is fun, but the book was soooooo much better. But of course, Daddy was happily married in the book, though tempted (unwittingly) by his secretary - and it was his SECRETARY (a barrel racer), who learned to ride the jumpers and rode in the jumping competition. But no, just about every Disney movie has to be about a widow or widower. I thought family values was the nuclear family - mom, dad and two kids, but Disney always has to kill off/divorce one parent prior to the movie?!?!? ROFLOL
It was the fact that the secretary was a barrel racer that made sense of the scene where Ms. Diane Baker Riding Teacher Extraordinaire teaches her to ride better by running barrels bareback. Makes NO sense in the context of H/J: A H/J teacher would just have made her drop stirrups or put her on the lunge. LOL

Back here in California, where so many H/J teachers came from the strong western traditions (Jimmy Williams being the most prominent), having your students run barrels bareback in that time period doesn’t seem out of place at all. Very few lunge lines out here at that time, either. Nope, you just took away the saddles (and for the advanced, the bridles), closed the gate to the arena, and let everyone work it out for themselves.
