My horse eats all phase 20 and eeze with no problems at all. I also add bodybuilder, vitamin e selenium and flax appeal but he doesn’t seem to like the powder. I mix them into his feed and he typically leaves most of the powder at the bottom. I tried soaking his feed and he ate less. I reduced the amount of each supplement and that didn’t work either. I’m at a loss. I want to add something to mask the flavour but also I don’t want all of his food to be mushy. I would like to try something sweet (apple sauce didn’t work in the past) but I don’t want to give him too much sugar. Any education or ideas would be greatly appreciated!
You can make apple sauce with no sugar.
I can’t imagine feeding powdered supplements dry. I feed a beet pulp and alfalfa cube mash and everything goes in there, salt flax VMS.
Can you wet his feed and mix?
People say fenugreek powder works really well as an appetite stimulant/supplement masker. I’ve never used it but have read good things. I think they make options specifically for horses too.
My horse is an easy keeper, so just gets a handful of beet pulp and a handful of Sr feed as carrier for his supplements/meds. For reference, what he gets fills a sandwich sized baggie - that’s it. To that I add 1/4 tsp fenugreek powder for palatability. He prefers it soupy - if it isn’t wet enough he’ll pick at it, but loves slurping up his soup (he’s such a goofball). You might play with different water ratios
He doesn’t eat as much when I soak his food so I was hoping to avoid that. I will try to add more water (maybe he likes it soupy not just mushy) and if that doesn’t work I will try fenugreek. I have been putting a bit of diluted apple juice in (about 1/2 cup) and he seems to like that but he also eats outside and when there’s snow he dumps his bucket and alternates between bites of snow and food. Thank you all for the suggestions! It’s greatly appreciated!
