Does anyone else do this? When I have sore muscles, I put my horse’s linament on them. (Generally, it is my lower back.) I noticed through trial and error that the Bigeloil liquid gel works great. The Bigeloil Topical Pain Relief Liquid just smells and is wet, but provides no relief at all, and Sore No-More Gelotion smells like applesauce and provides no relief at all. Can these products go bad or expire? Please no judgement answers. Also, I noticed that the Sore No-More has an expiration date of Nov. 2019.
It doesn’t go bad, but anything with alcohol will lose effectiveness over time once it’s open since alcohol evaporates-- that’s why rubbing alcohol expires. IME some liniments make my hands tingle when I use them and some don’t, and it doesn’t necessarily mean they are old.
I haven’t had an expiration issue with liniment, but I did have a bad experience with an old bottle of Bigeloil gel. This can happen with any alcohol-based gel liniment, actually.
I had probably had this bottle for a couple of years, as I didn’t use it often until we were conditioning harder as we moved up competitive levels. As gel liniments age, the water portion can evaporate out, leaving a more concentrated gel portion with the menthol and other alcohols. Needless to say, although I’d Bigeloil-ed and wrapped this horse in the past without issue, it burned and scurfed him pretty badly even though he was only wrapped for about 6 hours before being turned out.
If I absolutely feel like I have to liniment and wrap now, I’ll only use non-alcohol based liniment. That, or use a stronger liniment without wrapping.
