Horse name change

I just purchased a new horse that comes with a really difficult name to say (and sadly, I just don’t like it). Is there a way to officially change a horse’s name? She is registered Danish Warmblood. I’m just thinking about it if it is even possible. Part of me feels horrible even thinking about changing her name, feels like bad form, but I just can’t imagine saying her name for the next 20+ years:-(

You can officially change it with USEF/USDF, but it’s going to cost you. Check out the respective organizations’ websites for the details.

I have a horse with a registered name I’m not fond of, but I just don’t call him that.

You start by checking with the registry - they ALL have different rules on name changes. I just changed a horse’s name because it was - awful… Registry allowed it because the horse had no offspring, but every registry is different in their rules on name change.

Then USEF/USDF allow it for a fee if the horse has lifetime recording/registration with them. If they DON’T have lifetime RR, then it is no fee (my horse had only had an annual recording, so it was no additional fee to get him his RR with the new name).

You can change with the USEF/USDF etc for a fee. I don’t know about Danish registry, but the Dutch registry does not allow name changes from a registered name (I don’t think anyway). When I bought my KWPN mare years ago, her registered name was Tsunami - this was right after the tsunami in Indonesia that killed so many. I thought the name was in poor taste, so I changed it with the USEF/USHJA but I couldn’t change it with the KWPN. It never really mattered either, I called her Lola, and her show name was the only name I ever really used unless we did some breeding-related things. I do think there’s a space on the USEF website to put the horse’s breed name if it is different from their registered showing name, too, if you’re worried about losing that aspect and the credit to the breeder.

The KWPN does allow name changes. We have always allowed name changes but softened our rules when the FEI rule changes regarding names came out. So as long as the new name starts with the same letter as the old name, the name can be changed at any time.

Can you not change her registered name (still show under it) but change her barn name to something you like?

I am assuming you are in North America. According to the NADWA price list, they allow name change of the horse, but it’ll cost you. $175 if within 3months of purchase, $350 if after that.

If you are in another country, either contact Dansk Varmblod in Denmark, or your country’s branch, if they have one.
