Horse ownership in a recession/depression

Border guards (both ways) are not stupid enough to think that a load of hay crossing the border is worthless (or minimal value). Do not see that flying.

Maybe not worthless, but being worth less than it actually is what I took it to mean. Nice alfalfa vs basic grass hay.

If you were a hay dealer crossing the border in any direction with a load, or indeed anyone crossing the border with goods that carry customs duties or tariffs, the relevant border agent would expect to see a receipt from the seller. Yes, you could collude with the seller to have them supply you a second false lower receipt, I suppose. But I don’t think just claiming a value with no receipt would get you very far.

I agree with you, but I’m sure people play with the numbers regularly.

I absolutely can see a hay dealer and a big farm agreeing on one price but pretending it’s another.

Looking at the Vessel Tracker and yikes! Very few ships coming in to the West Coast. The east coast probably has a couple more weeks before imports stop because it takes goods that already left that much longer to arrive there. After that? right now it looks like nothing is coming at all. Stock up on anything you may need this summer that’s made in China or shipped in via the Pacific shipping routes: bell boots, bits, helmets, anything plastic or nylon, tractor parts, medical supplies, fly masks, hoses…

Folks are saying on social media that stores are about to start getting slim on supplies soon.

DH husband shared last week that he saw something about a high up a Home Depot warning that their shelves were going to be looking pretty bare in not too much more time :frowning:

Latest bills - the one for spring was up there, but we had quite a bit done. Nothing on its own seemed outrageous.

This was for his shockwave today, def more expensive than the electro-stim acupuncture which was $200. 2 more shockwave sessions to go.

May 10-15 on the west coast, two weeks after on the east coast. That’s when it’ll start. I’m going to go buy all the plastic shavings forks I can find!

Too late for Temu unless they are in US warehouses. I think Chick’s might have had a special price on them.

I only buy the highest quality plastic manure forks. I hate it when the tines break! No Temu forks here.

What brand do you buy?
I need a couple new ones or
Sharpen the tines on the old ones.

I definitely read that last word as “horses” the first time and I was like, “Well, if I have to…”

I currently buy my Prascend through my vet’s account w Coveteus. Chewy has the big box for $30.00 less. Does anyone have a feel for which source might be more reliable with the upcoming tariffs?

I use a box a month…. I always have one box arriving as I open the box I’m currently using. I started this during COVID.

Are we anticipating pharmaceuticals (for horses especially) getting scarce/hard to source? I am not out of Prascend yet, but will be in roughly 6 months. I’ll add this to my pool of anxieties about our current economy…sigh…

Boehringer-Ingelheim is American based, but I’m sure the actual ingredients for Prascend are foreign sourced.

Prascend is manufactured in the Czech Republic. The Zimecterin Gold I bought yesterday is manufactured in Brazil. Discovering where our horse products are made will reveal how we may be impacted.

Edited to add: there are no tariffs on products from the Czech Republic and a 10% tariff on products from Brazil.

Another edit since the Czech Republic is part of the EU. There was or is a 10% tariff, but the numbers constantly change due to the erratic nature of what is happening. At one point the EU tariff was threatened to be 200.%

Manufacturing is one piece, but to really understand any tariff impact, material sourcing is just as relevant. Any transparency on where the materials are sourced?
