Horse ownership in a recession/depression

I’ve had trouble with Covetrus lately. Not sure why, I have a feeling it’s not tariff related but you never know. They’ll send me a message stating things have been shipped when they haven’t and then they deny they haven’t shipped and it’s always a mess. It just took three weeks for me to get Metformin and my last Prascend order in Feb took over 2 for the same reason. If you can get a script without a fight sent to Chewy, I’d go with them. Monday I sent another order in to Covetrus for Prascend, we’ll see how long it takes this time. I’d do Chewy but the vet frowns and I don’t want to rock the boat. I may have to though.

Material sourcing is not easy to find. Only the manufacturers can tell you that, if they choose.

That’s my experience as well. Didn’t know how many companies were being that transparent or not; the link I posted from Biostar was prepping their customers for the increases. In any case, where it is manufactured doesn’t tell us enough to really know what to plan for.

I snagged a couple extra pairs of splint boots and fly masks off Amazon to hold me over for a while.

Fun times

I just bought an extra fly mask, lead rope and bell boots. Thanks for the reminder!

While fly spray might be plentiful, are the actual plastic spray bottles made in China?

Probably. I worry about all the hardware we use to fix things myself. The company hq may be on American soil but who knows where they source their fasteners, oil filters, new mower belts etc etc.

@cayuse, I have mine on auto ship and have never have a problem w Covetrus. Chewy is the one I have problems w with regard to shipping. Maybe it is FedEx. Covetrus ships using USPS. Who knows what will happen w that.

@sparkygrace, thank you.

I would really expect Covetrus to get drug shipments before Chewy if supply gets tight.

Thanks @Simkie. That was my thought, too, but I wanted others’ thoughts. I always learn so much here.

Just dropping this here since it’s somewhat related to the earlier discussion of vaccines and now we’re talking about Chewy…

I ordered my spring vax from Chewy this year. Same prices as everyone else, BUT no special shipping charges. Vax arrived well-packed in an insulated box and with a TON of ice packs.

Exactly!

Biostar does have country of origin on each ingredient on their product pages, they have been doing that for a number of years.

A product can be made in the US but contains ingredients from all over the world. That’s the tricky, complicated part. Supplement companies will pay tariffs on ingredients they import. And many many ingredients in equine/canine/human supplements come from outside the US: vitamins, amino acids, herbs, certain probiotic strains, specialty ingredients.

To think the US will be able to ramp up and grow, provide, produce these ingredients is a certain kind of insanity.

I think the bigger issue will be packaging in the short term. I don’t know where every plastic packet and bubble pack is made but I’m guessing they don’t have the variety of lines in the USA to make nearly what’s in common use now.

I’ve always questioned why we don’t have a system to return used packaging and reuse it? I literally cringe every time I throw away bubble wrap. There’s nothing wrong with it but I don’t have a need for everything I receive and they don’t accept it in the recycling. I think I still have a roll of bubble wrap in the basement from the times when we didn’t receive it by the boatload all of the time.

You can recycle bubble wrap at almost any dropoff recycling location. Generally if they take plastic bags they take bubble wrap.

There is some recyclable packaging out there. My brother is head of R&D for one of the ones that is US based: TemperPack. All three of their factories are in the US. They specialize in recyclable packing, mostly for medical or food uses. Uses some interesting stuff, at one point he was playing around with cellulose from corn stalks. I should ask him what is going on for packing…

I take all of my bubble wrap to a package shipping place by my residence. They reuse it to pack and ship items for customers.

Though groups that have placed trackers have reported many store drop-offs send their plastic right to the landfill. Still, at least there is a chance it will be recycled!
