horse photo shoot--what to wear?

Ok, so please don’t laugh, because it is kind of a silly question, but I have a photographer friend that is kind enough to come take some pics of my horse and I, and because I don’t really have any pictures of him that I am in love with, I am super excited about it! Now me, being as clothes/fashion obsessed as I am, immediately thought–“so what should I wear?” So, besides proper footwear, any suggestions? Basically, when you guys see pictures of horses and riders (just on the ground, nothing under saddle) do you think it looks best to wear riding clothes (breeches, boots, polo), jeans and a cute shirt (maybe a button down) with “riding boots” (the street ones, not actual ones–I have a caramel and gray pair), or even a casual dress? Or another suggestion? Thanks for your help!

Take a change or two. Formal and fun!

I think I’d wear breeches and tall boots, and a top that photographs well (maybe vneck sweater or bright colored tee). And wear makeup.

I had one done a few years ago. I just wore jeans and boots and a sweater. No makeup and my hair is in a ponytail. I have seen all kinds and almost all of them are nice, though.

Look at a bunch of photos and decide what you like. But I agree, one costume change is a good idea.

Personally, I love the dresses with boots.

DH & I did a photo shoot like this last fall.

Photographer told me a simple light colored button down & dark jeans. He said that sweaters can be unforgiving- every lump/bump/line is visible. The light top will be better if you opt for B&W versions of prints. If you do a wardrobe change, you could go flowy A-line skirt or boots & britches.

Pre-photo shoot take some time to think of the little things you do with your horse- the every day bonding moments. Write these down to give your photographer some ideas. Also, look online for photo inspiration. Both were a huge help to us. Hope you love your photos as much as we do!

This is what I’d wear if I were you!
Casual:

  • Dark-wash jeans
  • Tall boots (not meant for riding)
  • Button-down or Henley
  • Makeup & curled hair

Formal:

  • Tan breeches & belt
  • Tall boots (meant for riding)
  • Polo
  • Makeup
Also if I had a nice Charles Owen helmet i might wear it unbuckled for some pics! Otherwise just braided nicely or down.
For the horse id groom him nicely, maybe showsheen, brushed mane and tail, and with a bridle or nice leather halter on.

Depends how traditional you want to be. I personally dream of photos where I’m wearing a white dress, barefoot and bareback.

I did this exact thing last month with my horse in a field around twilight with a natural light photographer… I look like a bohemian cowgirl princess and the pictures wonderful.
