Horse Pre-Race ? Pentosan?
Curious about the dis-coloration with pentosan…My Grey horse gets "stains"on his neck so I changed injection site to hind end.
I had three bays that all ended up with weird light colored spots and a change to hair texture in the area where they received pentosan injections (the Wedgewood version). It took probably a year and at least two changes in coat (summer to winter, then winter to summer) for the blemishes to disappear. Since that happened, I’ve read of others here on COTH that had similar spots show up. I’ve been using the HPR stuff on one of the same horses all summer this year and not had that problem.

I’ve never had any of the problems some people have reported like change in hair color, lumps etc, with either Wedgewood, Wycliffe or the HPR or HMOL Pentosan. To prevent the lump, I inject slowly then massage the area afterward.

I did notice that now instead of being light amber in color the Pentosan is now clear. I did question someone at HMOL and they said that it’s because now it does not need to be refrigerated.

Race Horse Meds is the same company.

I buy pentosan from HPR all the time, no issues. Although my last order of one vial of pentosan and one tube of omeprazole, they sent me no pentosan and 40 tubes of omep. Whoops! They sent me the pentosan immediately and told me to keep the tubes.
I’m sorry, but I’m just not seeing that these are the same company…how do you know that? The labels are different and the pricing is different. I’m just curious as I’ve been tempted to order these products, but haven’t been able to bring myself to as of yet. It bothers me that they are not up front about where and how the products are processed. There are 3 companies that all appear similar in terms of market, product line, no need for RX, etc.:

 • HorseMedsonline
 • HorsePrerace
 • Racehorsemeds

I’m glad so many have had good experiences, still, I remain leery. Does anyone know why or how the above companies are able (and I use that term loosely) to see Pentosan without an RX, when Wedgewood, US Compounding and Heartland Veterinary all require an RX?

Wedgewood’s Pentosan gave one of mine big lumps for awhile. I contacted them and sent the bottle back. They replaced it and the lump problem went away, but my other horse got the discolored spots under the injection sites (hamstring). The last time he had any Wedgewood product was July and the discolored areas are still there, but mostly faded.

Several reasons make me believe this.

 1. The person answering my emails had the same name (Simon I think?).

 2. HPR products were linking to the RHM site for awhile, and vice versa. If you’d click to order it would take you over to the other site. This was my biggest clue.

 3. They all employ very similar crappy SEO practices. I can’t believe three separate companies would use identical SEO work. It’s possible but not likely.

I only order from HPR so I can’t say if the orders ship from the same location. That would be the ultimate proof.

Just stopping by to point out that those who keep saying “it’s a 6mL dose” are not necessarily correct.

Dosage is to be calculated BY WEIGHT. My 1500lb horse gets just over 8mL per dose. There are many, many, many threads on COTH that will tell you exactly how to calculate the correct dosage for your horse by weight. Under-dosing will not do you any favors.

I ordered from HPR, the pentosan gold, and did an IM injection with a 1" needle last night and had these photos sent to me from my pony rider.

I’m not sure if I did it wrong, on two different ponies, or if they had a reaction? Would it be worth trying IV next time (with someone who can do IV) or throw the bottle out.

A 1" needle isn’t long enough to get into the muscle. You need a 1 1/2" needle. You basically did a sub-q injection instead which won’t do any good.
