Horse Prerace Pentosan Gold--Reactions?

Has anyone had hive type reactions from Horse Prerace Pentosan Gold, specifically Batch # 083115, Exp. 08/17?

The company is responding (to a friend who had two horses react from a fresh bottle) that they have heard of IM issues, but not IV issues, but haven’t suggested a recall.

Anyone?

I purchased pentosan (not gold) in Dec, but it is the same batch number, 083115. Started two horses on it last week; no problem to date.

My coach gave it to three of her horses and two had colic like reactions, the third was fine.
The two who had reactions have been on regular pentosan for over a year, was first time receiving gold.
Was a brand new bottle, given IM

Had two very bad reactions with the gold (same bottle, two different ponies), never with the regular. Brand new bottle given IM.

So we contacted the company and asked to exchange the three bottles we had for a different batch. They argued some and then sent a shipping label (three times, the first two were addressed to us). Shipped the pentosan gold back. According to tracking information, it was received, however they now refuse to respond to email requesting tracking information for the exchange. We now have to contest the credit card charge. Beware!

Strange, after this convo I emailed them and they sent me a new bottle and didn’t need mine back or anything. I did ask for the regular pentosan not the gold and they did so without question or headache

I’ll have to check my batch number, but I’ve been using their Pentosan Gold for quite a while now and never a reaction. Always given IM too. I’ve never seen where you can give it IV?? If you can give it IV I would rather do that to prevent any muscle soreness from giving it IM.

Their customer service has always been great too. Hopefully your issues are resolved.

I’m using Pentosan Gold right now but keep forgetting to check the batch number to compare to this thread. No reactions at all so far. I’ve had good customer service from HPR in the past, so surprised at the lack of response to Cowgirl. I agree with contesting the credit card charges.

I did finally get the new Pentosan Gold and my friend who was also exchanging that batch got hers. I think perhaps they just had trouble figuring out how to send shipping labels and tracking information, and also the new batch has a January 2016 date, so perhaps they were waiting for the batch to be prepared. I haven’t tried it yet, but my friend had a brilliant idea of just giving one cc to start to be sure her horses don’t have the reaction they had with the batch we returned. I do like the product.

Dealing with a boarders horse right now that has a horrific reaction to it. He’s an absolute mess. I’ll have her check her batch # and get in touch with them.

Purchased the Pentosan Platinum, just finished my first bottle of it, given 6ml every 3 days IV. No issues there, purchased the Pentosan Gold which is on route to me right now, will check the batch number when it arrives.

I wanted the Platinum because of the HA, but it’s not cost effective and I don’t like the idea of giving it every 3 days every week.

Well this makes me very apprehensive! I’ve used Pentosan Gold from HPR on my horse plenty in the past without any issues. He has not been on it for a while and I decided to restart him on it. My new bottle of Pentosan Gold just arrived today. Now I am worried to use it. For those who’s poor horses had reactions, were they all colic-like in nature? Anything else I should watch for? Eastwind Farm - what was your border’s horse’s reaction? Can you please post that lot/batch number asap? Thanks so much.

When my horses reacted to the Pentosan Gold (last year) it was with a large swelling with edema around the injection site (side of neck in this case). Large meaning about a 10-inch diameter area.

I have since switched back to Wedgewood Pentosan and have not seen any reactions. I also have seen a very noticeable improvement in horse’s movement and comfort, whereas I saw little if any improvement on the HPR Pentosan Gold. Now I question whether the product actually contains any Pentosan at all. Maybe it’s just glucosamine. Who knows what is in there? Good luck finding out.

I’m also wondering, for the people who haven’t had any success with Pentosan, which formula they used.

Just wanted to add – a few years ago I had a problem with Wedgewood’s pentosan, with swellings at the injection site. They were great to deal with in reporting the incident. Had me return the bad bottle and replaced the product with a new batch. There’s always a risk with any injectable (had problems in the past also with Adequan). At least Wedgewood has someone you can call. HPR was terrible to deal with.

Jingles for your boarder’s horse, Eastwind.

HPR did recently change the adminstration route to IV for the Pentosan Gold, the change is both on the website and vial. Was writing dosage instructions and happened to double check - seems like IM is not okay anymore, maybe because of the adverse reactions?

I’ve used plain pentosan from them with no issues in the past. I just received a fresh vial of the PG - batch#: 010417, dom: 1/17 - but I might just do adequan instead. Scary stuff :frowning:

I have switched over to adequan and legend. The last bottles I received from HPR after I made them exchange came to me with NO BATCH NUMBERS or expiration dates. To me that’s just not acceptable. Plus I have finally woken up and realize that I should not be injecting anything in my horse that is not FDA approved. Who knows what’s really in those bottles… It’s just too darn bad that you need prescriptions.
