Horse Pros: How much time would this save you?

For horse professionals who sell horses at least somewhat frequently, I’m curious if the value of the service below would be worth outsourcing vs doing it yourself.

I come to your farm, and depending on your package of choice, I deliver some quantity of professional quality photos and videos of your sale horse(s).

Transparent, per-horse pricing with easy to understand packages. All packages come with at least a professional grade (read: not taken on iPhone) head shot and conformation photos. Fully edited and ready to go.

If videography services are requested, a fully edited and color graded video is returned with NO music but not muted so you can hear hoofprints, environment, etc. Exported in 4K for you to post on socials and website for sale of horse.

All you have to do for the day is:

  • have horses pretty and ready to rock and roll
  • be available to hold and/or ride all horses if applicable (or have help on deck - for liability reasons I cannot hold or provide a rider)
  • come with a list (mental or physical) of what each horse is advertised to be able to do to keep the day moving

Pricing starts at $100 for headshot and conformation photos (5 photos total). +$100 for <5min sales video add on. Additional packages include more photo options and may include videography as well. Rights sold with package for use for advertisement of sale only. Discounts available for multiple horses.

Thoughts?

Consider also expanding your market to everyone that has a horse or facility, not only sale horses.
Plenty of horse owners or others with horse related business, weddings with carriage drives and such, would love to have that material about their horse/s.

A lot of “depends”. In my area, people already have their favorite photographers. We also don’t have any shortage of equine photographers…some professional/went to school for photography and MANY with DSLRs who have some basic photo/editing skills.

Is there a market gap in your area for this? How well are you connected in the horse world where you live? What is your photography background/resume?

I agree with Bluey that I wouldn’t just target horse sales ads; people here do photoshoots just because, so you could easily lose out on a lot of business that way.

What’s in the 5min video if you aren’t shooting video?

As someone with some personal & professional experience in this area, it is very hard to get horse people to invest in quality media. They basically don’t see the value difference in an iphone photo vs. a professionally shot one, as long as 4 legs and a head are present. Or understand why a grainy video shot from the far side of the ring can’t work just as well for a Reel as a 4K video shot close up.

I’m thinking you’ll find that by the time you drive to the farm, spend half the day shooting, get back home and spend another half day+ editing, that those prices are going to leave you making right around minimum wage. Will certainly work better if you’re hired to do several horses in one location but, unless you live an incredibly horse-dense monied area (a la Wellington), you’re going to run out of barns within reasonable driving distance real quick.

Same here. In fact, one of the ladies I ride with is a very successful wedding photographer and videographer. She does all of the barn’s sales videos and annual owner/horse holiday headshots for a very nominal fee.

I also know that several of the sales agents who market horses online will include a professionally shot video of any horse they take on consignment. They send one of their preferred professionals, off a curated list, to your location.

So while I wouldn’t discourage OP from giving this a shot, I think it’s important to really do local research and see if there’s a need or a want for such a service.
