It is a gift link. I read it and don’t have a subscription.
I couldn’t read it either. If it was a gift link to you, I don’t think you can pass it on, but I’m not sure.
I think you can read if you subscribe to a free account. Ie, give them your email. I get enough spam, meself
Two Arlington Cemetery caisson horses died of impaction colic in 2022. Apparently this was due to management practices. The army suspended use of the caisson horses and is looking to improve its training.
That article was pretty darn interesting.
I have toured that Arlington facility a few times over the years when I was in the area. The horses always looked happy and healthy when I saw them.
They are in good hands; Chester Weber and David O’Conner are taking care of them.
Our current farrier just got out of the Army and worked with the Caisson horses. He’s great with the horses - firm but fair - we have one that just pulls because she can and he’s going about not going overboard with reprimand while still not letting her get away with it so she’s gotten better.
He’s great at trimming, and also listens to my friend that has done a ton of research on horse trimming and is often at odds with established farriers. He’s young and I think the experience in the military has given him a way of listening to people and making them feel heard that is an asset - I imagine he’s had to nod his head at many a ranking individual in his day!
Sometimes he just offers his reasoning for something, sometimes he just nods his head, sometimes he adjusts.
I think this facility has had issues for many years. I recall reading an article about it previously, and thinking that managing it would be not an uphill battle, but more like climbing Mount Everest.
Between now enough hours in the day, lack of funds and lack of help, it would be a major exercise in frustration!
