Horse Rescue

Anybody know anything about Colbys Crew Rescue? No - I am not interested but a friend sent a post with one of their horses. I don’t think she is seriously considering it but I had not heard of them before. I believe they are in Pennsylvania.

I don’t know a whole lot about them, but I do follow them on TikTok and they seem to pull horses from dire situations that no one else wants and get them sorted out/rehomed. I think a lot of them are auction “destined for slaughter” pulls. They look cute and she puts a LOT into rehabbing them.

My understanding is that they are fairly new and their 501©(3) is still pending. I only started hearing about this rescue about a month ago. So far I’ve only seen positive things, but that’s based mostly on social media and not anyone’s actual experiences.

It’s been awhile but I got wind of someone who knew them saying they do more flipping than rescuing and it’s not all what it looks like from their social media.

I wouldn’t donate to a rescue, truthfully, unless I’d seen it with my own eyes or a horse person who was levelheaded and educated recommended and praised it to me. Anyone can craft a nice social media presence.

However, there’s no harm looking at a horse, and seeing about going from there. Do they adopt, though, limiting the ability to resell the horse in the future (if that’s a concern)? I checked the page and it looks like they prohibit resales. The second horse on the page is very eye-catching. Is that the one your friend is interested in? https://colbyscrewrescue.org/available-for-adoption

I only know of them from TikTok but I have followed them almost since the beginning when they got Colby. They are based in Virginia but the feed lot they pull from is in PA.

It really is fascinating how social media turned these two women from just regular people who rescued a horse to a 501c3 (their website does say that is still pending) who can fund raise $50k in an afternoon live streaming on Tiktok from a kill buyers lot. Again, I don’t know anything first hand other than watching them but it’s hard to imagine they are making up most what they are showing on a live stream. Their regular home vets seem legit, they’ve had them on the live stream many times. They send horses to New Bolton right out of the feed lot and the show so much of it online. I wish they did more videos about what is happening with more of the horses they pull from the feed lot but I think they post a lot of content on Patreon behind a pay wall which I don’t participate in. I just watch the free tiktok content and follow on IG. I don’t know but they seem legit to me.

I used to follow them on TikTok until they rubbed me the wrong way. I think there is a fine line that they are straddling between being flipped and being rescuers. They work with the kill buyer who actively sends loads to Canada and Mexico and buy horses directly from him. I have seen them pull severely injured or sick horses and send them to New Bolton for hospitalization/treatment, they will do diagnostics on horses before making the hard decision to euthanize them, which is good. They seem to have numerous “sanctuary horses”. I think they do good work in general and I probably wouldn’t be concerned about adopting from them (though their fees are significantly higher than other rescues I’ve seen, especially for riding horses).

A couple things that are slight red flags to me: first, every time they livestream from the kill pen they have a goal to pull as many horses as possible, sometimes a dozen or more. They go live at least twice a month if not more often. Yet they don’t seem to be listing that many for adoption. They DO raise $4,000 for each horse before pulling to ensure medical/quarantine is paid for which is good. But it just seems like A LOT of horses being pulled and very few leaving. They said in a recent live they have over 80 horses in their care currently. Second, they have said in numerous livestreams that the rescue community doesn’t like them. That to me is a red flag - why do you have apparent conflict with the rescue community? It might just be because they are pulling from a kill buyer - but maybe it’s for something else that we can’t see from a public perspective.

All in all, I DO think their horses are cared for and they seem to put a lot of effort into ensuring they are set up for success and good homes. They do pull some nice horses.

So is it Moore they buy from?

No. I believe they pull from Rotz.
