Horse Rescues

So I’m looking for input;

Instead of the normal ’ wow i just love this expensive furry purple sweater that looks like a small animal vomited’ types of gifts this Christmas, I am going to request that my family donate money to a TB rescue… but here’s the question… Which rescue??

Any input, experiences ect.ect…

Well… I guess it depends on how you look at it- programs like CANTER are designed so that the trainers are able to make better choices- saving the horses from ever HAVING to be an “urgent!” rescue at an auction/lot.

Both are really valuable, of course and another one to look into is AC4H, they’re at NH nearly every week and also work through brokers.

The White Bridle Humane Society does great work. I donated a horse to them over the summer. He now totes around amputee war veterans and if all goes according to plan, will be in the Veteran’s Day Parade in downtown Dallas this week!

I try to encourage all our owners to give to the Irish Horse Welfare Trust instead of buying us alcohol for Christmas. Mr. and Mr. Equilibrium don’t have time to drink anyway! I’m not suggesting anyone donate to the IHWT, I just try to encourage chartity where I can.

Also, I just noticed the IHWT has been handing out little plastic sacks for old cell phones. You pop your old cell phone in the bag, send it back via freepost which is already labled, cell phone is recycled, and money is then given to the charity.

I just collected a bunch of bags at the feed store yesterday and am now hunting down old cell phones from everyone I know!

You could try Horse’s Haven in MI. They have a website you can check out to see what types of rescues they do. I know they are really in need, as I am sure most rescues are right now.

United Pegasus Foundation in Southern California

UPF is a wonderful group with about 90 horses. Most of their retirees are in their late teens and early 20s now (mainly because she’s taken such good care of them through the years). They REALLY, REALLY need help…seriously, they are in danger of filing for bankruptcy because the tracks are not supporting the TB rescues the way they did in the past. As for TB Friends…Joe definitely can spin a good yarn but I’ve had less than favorable dealings with that group.

I would have to go with a CANTER group or another rescue that gets the horses BEFORE they go to auction or to a broker.

The killbuyers at each auction are well aware of who the rescues are and are bidding the prices up accordingly.

Or, with several tracks trying to implement a zero tolerance policy, donations to a rescue in that area, will help them offer viable options for the horses.

Here’s a very nice one that’s in New England that I sponsor. Their program evaluates the horses for several months before offering them to new owners. They’ve had great success retraining horses right off the track and moving them on to new homes. http://www.retiredthoroughbreds.org

You might also want to call your local humane society and see if they rescue horses, and if yes, if you can make a targeted donation for them to assist with rescue horses. Another one that’s terrific is New Vocations, and they do have a Michigan facility. www.horseadoption.com.

i would give a list of great rescues and let the family members pick which they’d like to donate to. What a fantastic idea! Good for you! Id also have them donate to those who are being pulled from kill pens. Those are the horses in the dyer need.

The kill buyers will not jack up the price in a bidding war. They want to pay as little as possible for that animal and they arnt going to jack up the price just because they know whos bidding against them. If you were to approach the kill buyer after the auction is through=thats when the price goes up
