Horse Retirement in Southern California

I’m hoping to get some recommendations for retirement facilities in Southern California for our 13 year old mare who tore a tendon in her hock. We’re in Orange County, and ideally would like her close enough to visit relatively easily, such as Riverside, San Diego or L.A. County. But we’d also consider areas that are further away if we found an excellent situation.

She is walking sound on it, and the vet said there are no restrictions as far as pasture size at this point. Although we haven’t had her in a pasture situation, she gets along well with other horses, so a group/herd setting would be an option.

Price is a consideration because we need to leave enough room in the budget for a new horse, but the priority is to make sure our girl is happy and well-cared for. It’s a big decision, and any recommendations would be greatly appreciated.

Creek Hollow Ranch in Ramona, CA

My horse and I have been happy with Terri Eadens horse retirement, but it’s a trek from Southern California.

My layup horse, who is actually now being ridden, is at NexStar Ranch in Temecula. Also very happy there and they do do retirement.

You may have some luck finding a back yard boarding facility with turnout space. When we lived in palos verdes, we had our two horses at home. Our neighbor had a six corral turnout/stall arrangement and she regularly took in other horses. Drive around the horse facilities in residential areas near you and see what you can find. Home barns are generally less expensive because they dont come with arenas etc. However often there are community rings if you feel you can do “some” riding with your horse

There is a really nice facility off of Indian Truck Trail and the 15 fwy just outside of Corona. I can get the name and number if you are interested. It’s a former TB breeding farm.

There are also a few nice places in Fallbrook and Elfin Forest. You can google horse retirement and Fallbrook and they will come up. You can also look up Horsetrader online or Ride Magazine online and quite a few places come up.

When you go look at places, check out the condition of the horses, find out what they do about farrier, vet and daily care if any. Sometimes a place may not be fancy, but the horses look fantastic. That’s always my clue on how the horse care is.

I am looking for a nice retirement facility in Southern California for a show horse that is not very old, but needs to retire from showing due to injury. Pastures would be great and an opportunity to ride him on a trail from time to time. Any suggestions?

NexStar Ranch in Temecula. Great care and access to trails, close enough to ride over to Galway Downs. They also have a huge arena.
